Well, Im not really a sound guy, so I cant really answer that in a techincal since...but Ive noticed as shows that Sub-Surface has played w/ rock bands and/or punk bands and stuff...all it seems like they need is an amp and a basic PA system...monitors seem optional...and things like that...w/ hip-hop its the sound has to be mixed differently because the focus is on what the MC is saying and the DJ is cutting...it has to be mixed so that both the beat bumps...and the other factions can be heard simultaneously...again...apologies if that doesnt really help...Im not really sure how get it across technically...but I can tell you when I hear a good mix versus a bad one for sure.

I tend to agree with Tim on this.

Typically a smaller or younger band may have limited funds for decent equipment. They make do with what they have with mediocre sound quality. A lot of punk and some rock is all about distortion and effects and can mask a mediocre mix and a flawed system.

Now plug in an MC and a DJ, especially without a proper soundcheck, I can see how a lazy, or inexperienced soundguy would make it sound weak at best.

It CAN sound good, with decent equipment and a soundguy who knows what he is doing.

I bet I could get you guys to rock.

In my opinion bands are going to have a full sound initially because of the amount and variety of instruments and how they are set up on the stage. I have seen good hip hop and bad hip hop shows.

Being just 1 or 2 MCs and a Dj everything has to be on point. Because you are focused on that MC and the only thing supporting him/her is the track behind him and its clarity and fullness.

Bands, your sound is coming from all directions, their are members in all directions, so peoples visual and audio focal points aren't usually fixated on the singer but everything going on around the singer too.

Bands make many errors on stage that are never picked up by the crowd because there is so much more going on up there that you are never focused on one thing.

MC's or DJs make a minuscule error, or the mix is band you are going to notice it way more and fixate that issue.

Well hopefuly you can understand that, I am with -37, i am no sound guy but thats my thoughts.

...Looks like Al pretty much summed up what I was getting at...but yeah Tim is correct, I guess I am speaking more on mixing than I am acoustics...

So are yall (JamCrib) reps open to having hip-hop shows there?

Great response from bands so far. We'll be doing shows both Fri. and Sat. nights each week starting May 19th. There are still some slots to fill for May, so anyone interested contact me.

There will not be a show on May 13th so I can attend my daughters graduation ceremony which is out of town. Other than that it should be the month of Mayhem at Jam Crib :onfire:

Tim, we are taking May off to write and rehearse new stuff and then June is all business for us. I would love to get on one of these shows in July if at all possible.

Sounds great. By the way may I suggest the Jam Crib for all your rehearsal needs. A professional environment that inspires creativity and productivity for many of the area's leading musicians and has rates affordable enough for even broke ass wannabes.
