GAS BOYCOTT----May 15th
If you haven't already seen it posted on various sites, there will be a gas purchasing boycott taking place on the 15th of May. The last time such a boycott was made, the gas companies lost over 22 million in sales. Perhaps if this is done enough they might get the message.
The oil companies already have their money, it is the gas stations that lose out for that day. The gas will still be there on the 16th when everyone will need it and they will probably jack the price more. Gas prices are driven by supply and demand just like everything else. We are using more gas than the oil refineries can produce (or choose to produce), so the cost is up. One day without buying gas doesn't do sh*t.

Want to see gas prices come down? We NEED new refineries. Haven't built one in the US in over 20 years and our capacity for refinement is too low compared to demand. Hence supply is lower. Supply lower than demand = higher prices.
Drill in ANWAR and build refineries and gas will be back down under $2 in fairly short order.

My understanding is that the conservationists won't let a new refinery be built in or around the US, hence none being built in the last however many years. No idea to the veracity of that statement, but it's what I heard. I agree with Bassjones though...new refineries are sorely needed in order to bring gas prices down.
Oh yeah...a "gas out" won't do anything but hurt the local retailer. It won't do a damn thing to the gas companies.

Change "Conservationists" to "Environmentalist" and you're right on. There is a difference. Basically, Conservationists are hunters, fisherman, outdoor sportsmen who believe we should do what we can within reason to preserve the environment. Stuff like recycling plastic and paper products, reducing emissions w/in reason, using alternative building materials where possible. Basically a common sense approach to the environment. We (I consider myself in this category) would be happy to see new, cleaner refineries that would actually reduce pollution.zenmandan wrote:My understanding is that the conservationists won't let a new refinery be built in or around the US, hence none being built in the last however many years. Environmentalists are mentally ill.

I've seen this post before, and I have to say it's a good idea if nothing other than the message that it sends, but really, this does nothing to the gasoline companies or the oil industry because of a simple economic concept called consumption. In theory, it seems like it would deal a blow to not fill your tank on that day, and it does send a message, but only to the retailer who has crappy sales for that day. The oil companies already have their money. The gasoline refineries and distributors already got their cut too. You're hurting the retailer and even that isn't much because of (yes, I'll say it again) consumption.
Even if you don't buy your gasoline on May 15 (the ides of May?), if you still drive on that day the same way you would drive any other day, you've consumed the gasoline which will have to be replaced and paid for at another time (either before or after the Gas Out Day) which, in turn, has little or no effect on the gas companies. In fact, if they raise prices on the dates around the Great Gas Out, they can actually use the event to turn a profit, and you know they will.
The only way to hurt the gas companies is to REDUCE CONSUMPTION, not boycott buying gasoline for a specific day only to replace the used fuel on a prior or subsequent day. Carpool. Use public transportation. Ride a bike. Walk. Those things, and only those things, are going to take a bite out of the revenues of the gas and oil companies, and even that won't be felt until millions are doing it.
Like I said, it's a great idea, but it's not economically sound.

Instead of starting a movement to not buy gas, let's start a movement for people to stop forwarding stupidass chainletters to my inbox.

I'm gonna wait and fill everything I can up on May 15th, just in hopes of putting these stupid ideas to rest. I can't believe how many people thinks these are good ideas, either the don't buy gas on this day, or don't buy gas from this company. If your dumb enough to believe them then you deserve to pay 3.07 a gallon. New refineries, drill ANWR, f**k OPEC, or use coal or nuclear (spelling?) power. These will bring down oil prices.
And if you wait until the 15th to fill up, you won't have to wait in the gas line with STUPID PEOPLE. . . .poopstains wrote:I'm gonna wait and fill everything I can up on May 15th, just in hopes of putting these stupid ideas to rest. i agree that the problem isnt the refineries, even though we need cleaner refineries. the problem is in consumption. americans love the idea of now now now. we want prices lower, so lets destroy tons of wildlife so we can pay 15cents less at the pump. never mind the enviroment. maybe we should get our fat lazy asses out of our hummers and big suvs and walk a bit, maybe ride a bike. and while were at it, lets stop trying to piss the world off and maybe other countries will give us a better deal on gas.
im not a tree hugger, but i do care about the world and it inhabitants. for the record, i do drive an suv, a blazer. i need the room for my gear. but i dont mind walking a block to the grocery store or 2 blocks to the bar.
