Council Expands Smoking Ban

[quote]Starting this summer, Fort Wayne residents will likely have far fewer places to light up.

After nearly two hours of debate, the Fort Wayne City Council overwhelmingly supported stricter citywide restrictions on smoking but provided an exemption for tobacco stores.

The council voted 7-1-1 to support an almost complete ban on smoking in public places throughout the city. The council will take a final vote on the issue next Tuesday, but preliminary votes are almost always an exact indicator of final votes. If the ban is approved next week, it would take effect June 1.

Councilman Tim Pape, D-5th, said the decision over smoking restrictions should come down to whether the rights of businesses to choose how they do business outweigh the rights of people to breathe clean air. He gave a presentation listing the numerous health problems, and deaths, caused by smoking and secondhand smoke.

Just another reason why this city forking sucks.

I really wish they would legalize punching people in the face just for one day.

And these people call themselves Republicans....

Talarico said he could not support the exemptions because they would force employees to work in smoking environments. He relayed a story of seeing a teenage busboy clean tables in a restaurant’s smoking area over the weekend.

Jesus Christ on a Stick....that sounds like a soundbite from Nancy Pelosi herself. Last time I checked, the busboy and his parents had a CHOICE on where he worked!!!!

OK people, smoking is all but gone. Booze or Food. What's next? Someone needs to start a pool on what their next "public saving" rule will be.

I'm guessing transfats since alcohol brings in way too much $$$$.

And the state wants to raise taxes on cigarettes to go for health care. You would think that they would encourage smoking as much as possible!!!

Guns are always a fun target of these people. Trans fats is a good bet. SUV's seem like a potential target of the freedom police too.

We should stage a smoke in

Please use a clearly identifiable spit container... especially on stage. If I ever take a drink of my Guinness and it turns out to be red man spit, your lovely wife will be selling your drums to pay for your funeral.

I always use easily identifiable spitters. I have had the pleasure of swallowing cigarette butts and dip spit out of beer bottles and I try not to not do that to others.

Been there. Done that. I was zoned out playing a video game at a buddy's house one night and reached down for my Mt. Dew 1-liter without looking and grabbed the "spit/ash" bottle and took a gulp.

Instant puke.

I went to a bar tonight to watch the Lakers game because purchasing cable television is not worth my money and I don't watch it. I smell really smoky, and now I have to wash my sweater...I'm now pleased about this ban. At the moment. :)
