Band Looking for Guitarist

Post by Garr »

[edit]
Hey, this thread has changed direction. Originally, I was looking for a band. Now, the band I found is looking for another guitarist. We're in the process of setting up auditions, and we have written one song from start to finish. If you're interested post here or follow the directions at the bottom of this thread! Thanks, Garr

I am your worst nightmare. I'm a perfectionist. I'm flaky. I have a HORRIBLE work schedule that only allows very limited practice times. I don't have a place to practice.

I do have a lot of experience and skill at singing practically any baritone vocals for songs written in the last 30 years (maybe longer, who knows) and many tenor parts. I have a practice PA. I have several guitars (Gibson, Ibanez, Dean 7-string and more), a Line 6 POD XT Live running through a 900 watt powered amplifier and a Peavy XXX 4x12 Slant cabinet.

I can write music. I can learn covers. I can book. I can schmooze. I can drink insane amounts of beer from two fisted PITCHERS (after the show, of course.)

If you want to practice on Saturdays and Sundays, you have a place, and you're interested, let me know. I'd like to play guitar with a band that I join, but it is not necessary since I have my own solo guitar project that I can use as an outlet. If you want to hear a few of my songs, go to http://www.myspace.com/garrmusic and listen to a few. I have more, but they are not currently uploaded.

I suck. I know. I march on.

Although he lists himself as a perfectionist, he tolerates those of us who are less than perfect. I did an impromptu acoustic gig with Garr - he's an awesome guy. I liked one of his songs so much that I cover it, frequently and often!

Stop in and check the Jam Crib bulletin board. There are bands that don't post on fwm.com who are looking for musicians.

Cool. I'm available Saturdays after noon (I have class from 9 to noon) and Sundays after 5. Let me know what works, and we'll set up a jam. Do you know any bassists or other guitarists?

I've gotten a lot of responses. . .but it seems like maybe people aren't reading the first half of this post. I'll clarify.

Availability = SUCK ASS! I can practice a few times a week, but the times are VERY locked in. Wednesday OR Thursday 6-8, Saturday after Noon, Sunday after 5:00 PM. That's it folks. Same goes for shows. I have to use vacation time to get a Friday off, and we don't get that much.

Sucks? Yeah. I know. I'm working on switching jobs at IPFW, but it's been difficult, as the HR there seems to have their heads up their butts. Anyhow, thanks for all the interest. . .but don't PM or email me if you think that I can be flexible on that schedule. I care for my son during the day while my wife works, then I sleep from 6p to 9p, then I work from 10p to 6:30p. The only day I don't have the boy is on Thursday which means I could practice Wed and catch up on sleep Thu, or vice versa.

Sound like an ass? Yeah. I know. Gonna be hard for me to find a band? Yup. I know. Thanks for everyone's interest, though. I just hate repeating myself and explaining time and again what I've already put out there. Egads.

Hey, Doug, what's up? If I thought I could play that stuff, I'd honestly consider it. Some of the best guitarists out there (Brad Paisley, or however you spell it; especially) are in country, but I don't think I have the chicken pickin' ability to rock that out.

Are you guys looking for a guitarist?

Dam* funny thread. Yes, Garr, you are sort of a tough fit for a full time musician, but you have advertised it so honestly that nobody, least of all me, could knock you for it. Personally, I just can't play with people who have these kinds of limitations and I am equally anxious to make that clear right away.

Thank you for the full disclosure on your schedule limits, and for not wasting hardcore musicians' energy if they don't want to work with people limited to a part-time calendar. I respect the honesty a lot. I'm not kidding. I wish there were a lot more in the Fort as straight as somebody like you, so that we don't waste a few months of practice before we find out how many black-out dates the other guy wants to reserve. By being clear on our level of commitment up front, we all get the band that best fits our ambitions. It's a win-win which helps everybody and hurts nobody. Kudos.

Hey, thanks man! I appreciate the comments.

Believe it or not, I have actually gotten several bites on this. I have an audition tomorrow and one the following week. Lou from Basement What? is considering using me as a fill-in until he can find a full timer, so I'm honestly surprised at the responses I've gotten.

Thanks again, and hopefully, within a year or so, I won't have to have this horrid schedule!

Rock on!

Well, I had my audition with Derrick and Adam (formerly of Elemental) and Roger (their new drummer-guy) and I have to say that I feel like it went really well. I was there to audition for guitarist in an original band, and in an hour we had the framework of an entire song laid down. Adam's bass lines were punchy, funky, and inspiring and good enough that I was able to refrain from the guitarist sin of playing TOO much. Many times, I just laid back and rode the wave. He and Roger were in sync and kept me easily in place while I experimented with new parts and new sounds.

I really like the tune that we came up with and was surprised to see the evolutionary process move as quickly as it did. I've been invited back for the following Saturday and I hope to have a few more ideas on the table, but it felt so comfortable just coming up with them on the spot and exploring them there.

Thanks, Seve! At some point in time, we need to work on some stuff too! I just need to suddenly become independently wealthy so I can devote all my time to music!
