Yeah, another 30 years, and I'll be wearing those things again!

Well, we will see how these work out. We're using disposables now, but I did put an order in for the starter kit. Cost wise, they don't seem to be too bad, 40 inserts for $15...so they are a little more expensive and there is obviously extra planning involved to get them ordered, but I will at least give them a try!

Yup, I will. I'm not too optimistic, just from the perspective of increased cost and delivery, but, if for some reason, they just kick arse on ease to use and whatnot, it could be a good deal. Granted, i am sure this is all geared towards the enviroment-friendly sector...too bad I kick trees whenever I walk past one:)

I received my starter kit last Friday, which was pretty quick. So, my first issue, delivery, was pretty much resolved right there. They came quick! Granted, there is still a couple day lead time, but most parents should be able to plan a couple days out on their diaper supply.

My first impression was that they are looking pretty cool and stylish. Not something you are going to see on every baby, which to me is a plus. Unfortunately, with the environmental and style, I kinda feel they are a bit "yuppy-ish", trendy, per se, so that could be a downer to some people. But, I do like the uniqueness they bring, so that is kinda cool.

Using them has been pretty easy, really. The start kit came with two cloth diapers and four plastic "inserts". The inserts are what hold the disposable part, and protect the cloth outer shell from getting dirty or wet. They recommend you keep the extra one ready for changing, although I would think one or two more would be better.

The disposable part looks kinda like a big, rectangular maxi-pad. It fits inside the plastic insert nicely and seem to have really good surface area coverage on the baby. Its also very absorbant and seems to fit quite nicely. They look a little bigger than your average disposable, but not freakish:) And, with velcro fasteners, the diaper changes do feel a little quicker, once you have finished the cleanup.

Finally, disposal. I've been flushing, and honestly, its really easy. The insert dissolves pretty nicely. The only downside is that if you are the only one attending to baby, you really don't get a chance to flush or trash the insert until you can get both arms free. For me, that is usually 5 minutes or so, when I am able to put him down for a bit. Then I drop the insert in the toilet, flush , and come back to put a new insert in (thus the importance of having an extra couple for the rotation).

So, all in all, I think they are pretty neat, but I am not 100% sold. I can go out and buy a box of 80 disposables for $18. These inserts cost $14 for 40. The starter kit gives you 2 diapers and 4 inserts, although I would recommend getting a couple more (which cost about $17 a piece, with liners). So, it is a bit more expensive, to have the unique style and feel enviromentally responsible (if you care about that sort of thing).

My wife doesn't like them, due to just wanting to get the changing done and not want to find time to flush the insert (which again, does take both hands) and then prep the next one.

Will I continue to use them? Probably not. I may buy a pack or 40 inserts, as I do think it is a neat novelty, but it certainly isn't cost effective and take a little more time to prepare and dispose. At best, I would supplement the disposals with this "hybrid" diaper (I call it that due to it giving you some of the cloth world and some of the disposable).

What about "blow outs". I know disposables don't really always catch everything. The video on the gdiaper site said that theirs do (at least most of the time). I'd be curious what the word would be on that situation. I have a couple of friends that may be interested, but would love some further feedback before sending them the info.

zenmandan, well, no blowouts thus far, but realize, I've only used them to supplement disposables for what, four days? We started with Huggies, which blowouts seemed to happen at the sides. Recently with Pampers, the blowouts go up the back (which actually is easier to clean for me).

With the gDiapers, based on what I have already seen, it looks like a blowout would go out the side, but there is a plastic liner around the insert, so that seemed to catch anything over the sides. So far, the cloth portion has never gotten dirty, but I've gone through two of the liners (which our polyester so you either can rinse them or toss them in the laundry).

I didn't use any yesterday, so I will still hold off on judgement until a really big blowout occurs:)

As for diapers I think White Cloud are the best. They are the most effective and cost efficient but I will definitely try out the gdiaper with the next one...

...8 months and counting.
