Query To Singers Who Used To Be Smokers As Well...

I quit smoking about 2 months ago. While I was smoking, my voice sounded great and I had really good range. Since I quit, my voice has become completely shot, my range is gone and even just singing along with my radio sounds terrible. This was not entirely unexpected as it is my understanding that it takes a little while for the lungs to get rid of the buildup that my six years of smoking left there, however I was expecting that part of the quitting process to be over by now and it seems to still be the same with the phlegmyness and the tightness of my throat.

I was just wondering for those of you singers who used to be smokers, how long does it take before you get your voice back?

Nah, I'm not allergic to anything that I know of. I will say that even though it's been 7 weeks since I quit, it's only been about a month since the last time that I slipped up, but that was only a couple of cigs which shouldn't be affecting me this far out should they? I don't know, I just hope that my voice comes back soon and better than ever or my quitting will have been for naught.

This may help, but I have not quit smoking and I have no desire to, but I do suffer from throat problems from time to time. I use a herbal throat spray called "Singer's Saving Grace" I use the Extra Strength version. Anyway I purchase it at the health food store and it seems to work quite well. It has a soothing numbing effect and actually strengthens my voice. Maybe something like this can help your voice heal and sound better.

This stuff is incredible. Highly recommended. It's the only thing that gets me through some shows (though I've never been a smoker.)

what about the long-term effects of that stuff on your voice? I'd be more than a little worried about that.

I wasn't refering to the cigarettes. I was refering to the magic throat formula...

And I can't do that anymore either as much as I like having one on occasion.

Sheesh. No brainer.

Seriously, I smoke once in awhile and while it seems to enhance the quality of the LOWER tones in my voice, I have never noticed it helping the higher range. There's not doubt that Greg Allman sounded like he did back in the day in part due to whisky and cigarettes. And there's little doubt that he sounds the way he does today (awful) because of whisky and cigarettes. It's a trade off.

I vote for ocassional abuse only.
