Singer/Guitarist ISO Guitarist (maybe more)

Post by Garr »

I'm looking for an extra guitarist to join a band on the build. Right now I have a fairly confirmed drummer with a practice place. We've auditioned a bassist and we're interested, and he's said he is too, but that's where it stands. With the holiday weekend, communication has fallen lax.

I am primarily a singer who harbors the notion that he can play guitar. Seve, can you back me up? Anyone else? I'm on a restricted schedule, but I am dedicated to making a band work and I can promise that I'll be there to do my part.

I am a songwriter first and foremost. I don't care about fancy stuff. I don't care how friggen awesome your girlfriend and her chums think you are. Can you follow along? Can you harmonize? Can you improve on the foundation that someone else has written? Then I would be interested.

What do I want to do? I want to play original music. Do I think that works well in Fort Wayne? If you know me, you know that answer. If you don't, let me say this: a mixture of new music combined with familiar music appeals to a wider market. The style I'm going for could best be described as "ROCK!" Beyond that, I really don't want to restrict it. Bands like STP, Alice in Chains, Seether, Fallout Boy, Ra, and Stone Sour come to mind because of their fluidity of identity. They are not afraid to put their balls out there and rock out pretty hard or write some off-the-wall crazy sh*t, or toss in a well harmonized, melodic ballad where appropriate. I want to have that type of freedom with songwriting as well.

I can practice on Saturday and Sunday. I can play shows on Saturdays and an occasional Friday (or other weekday). I have a full-time, third shift job, a three-year-old son, and I'm taking classes at IPFW. The schedule is really close to non-negotiable.

I expect someone who will keep in touch with me through the week. I expect to hear from you sometime before an hour before practice (especially if there were things that needed to be decided at the end of the last practice [i.e. what material we're working on at the next practice].) I expect you to contribute. I expect you to tell me when what I wrote is crap. I expect you to care more about the song than how pretty you look or how much you rock. There's plenty of time for looking pretty and rocking out after the songs are kick-ass. I expect you to do your homework, because I can guarantee I will do mine.

I will be writing songs that I may not actually play. I know that when I try to sing and play at the same time, it can cause a song to lose its edge or hook or drive. I won't sacrifice the song for my delusions of guitar-godhood.

I don't think I'm asking for much, but I am asking for those things. Despite all the ground rules I'm laying out, I expect this to be a laid back, fun, and easy-going band and it doesn't matter to me if it takes 4-6 practices to write or learn a song if everyone is doing their part and having a good time. Within 6 months, I'd like to be opening and maybe playing full nights after that. If things are working well, I have a back-up plan for changing my schedule to be more conducive to band-life.

If, after reading all this, you're still interested, let me know. Right now, I'm just looking for a guitarist--specifically--but the band as it is now is fluid and I'm open to any good suggestions.

Thanks,
Garr

Garr is not screwing around, he can sing, play guitar and write great songs. If you are looking for a good rock band to join, this is it.

I was going to put them in there. Five years ago, I think I would have. After their last three releases, though, I don't feel that way about them anymore. Ten, Vs., Vitalogy, and No Code definitely fit, but the rest of it. . .well. . .they've settled into a niche (imo).

I'm setting up auditions for the weekend of September 22 and 23. If you're interested in trying out for guitar or maybe even vocals, PM me or post in thread!

Thanks.
