That's where I think things are divided...some of us like to hear things we are familiar with and have heard a million times...others want to hear the newer stuff, over and over and over again, and others just want to hear cutting edge stuff that is aligned with the kind of music we like...

I think for one radio station, that is impossible to accomplish...

And my recent research of the startup costs and licenses to start up a local station...well, are pretty hard to do. The best thing I could find was trying to do a non-profit educational setup, something that one could manage with one or two people, just putting out non-commercial bands on the air...range is an issue and startup cost, for something from scratch, you are still looking at tens of thousands of dollars...

I'd like to hear that a college town such as Fort Wayne got itself at least one college radio station.

Yeah. . .no doubt. How many friggen colleges are there here? Sheesh? There are at least three technical/vocational schools that should certainly have this. . .then there's a university known world-wide for its engineering department; and still we have nothing.

I think homestead has a radio station...

My goal was to find the cheapest, legal, way to broadcast a signal that would cover the Fort Wayne area...but as you can see form the FCC website, there is a ton of stuff to go through, not to mention that in order to get a building permit to start a new station, you have to get "proof" that the community would want something like that...

For something that I thought would be just a couple thousand dollars for equipment, a few hundred for the appropriate licenses and red-tape, its looking to be a lot bigger of a project for one guy to do...

I guess my next steps were to look at some of the colleges and see what sort of opportunity is there...but as most of these sorts of things go, unless you are motivated to do it yourself and really put a lot of effort into it, no change will be made, no matter how many people want to complain...its all about actually doing something about it!

Do people think there are enough bands that would be willing to "give their music away" to support a radio station only playing local music 24-7?

I mean, if there is not, I don't see any value with trying to figure out any of this. I have already talked to a couple more experienced radio people than I, and it seems that it is an uphill battle no matter how one cuts it...

I would give all mine away if such a station existed. Then the station would flop.

Radio is status quo, whether pro or college. College plays in the same mold with less moves. My upcoming album (The Tortoise Hustle) opens with a track about it.

For a socialist, that's some pretty shrewd marketing right there ;)

Well, the only reason I would even think about radio, over say an internet broadcast (which is quite easy to do) is the installed base. Much more people can tune to a radio station anywhere, then can get an internet-enabled device or some kind of downloadable broadcast. Obviously, using the internet as the medium is much cheaper and quite a bit easier...

I just have a hard time believing, that if there is a community desire to have such a station, and that said station was non-commercial and didn't profit at all...well, that it wouldn't be outrageously expensive to make something like that happen...but so far, I am not seeing anything promising, at least starting from scratch.

The only sliver of a loophole is being able to broadcast at a range of 200 feet, which obviously isn't practical for a radio station:) Non-comm seems to be the way to approach this, but step two is getting community backing for sending an application to the FCC and then getting a hold of the equipment...which I am sure could be gotten used, but at the coverage range for an entire city...well, I don't think that is something that can just sit in someone's backyard...

I don't follow politics enough to classify my beliefs, I just know that when I was sick in Australia, we were poor and still could afford to go to the doctor.

Let's just save all those startup costs and use them to buy a few hundred more CD's for WJHS 91.5 to play. They have the format and the streaming, now they just need more to play.

We have that same thing here...it is called PARKVIEW...just show up. They will give you all your drugs FREE, do anything it take to get you back on your feet no questions asked, and even pay for your cab ride back to your house so you can sit there and smoke crack...lol...

NOW...if you walk in with ANY hint of having a job or are in actual NEED of good healthcare you will be charged accordingly...

But I digress..lol...

What this town needs in radio http://www.96wave.com

I stick by 92.3 because at least I know there is going to be some variety. I get sick of the same songs over and over and over and over and over and over...I think you get the point. One reason I am glad ROCK 104 is back. A little harder edge than 92.3 and variety...so I kick back and forth between them pretty regularly...

So if I can't have 96 WAVE online I stick with 92.3 and 104 for my 'air' music. :)

I meant something like that. But I will most likely be moving in that direction in a year, so don't mind me.
