Exactly. Get used to it folks, the era of ND football greatness is gone forever. They should be playing teams like Yale and any success they have in national football is impressive, but they'll never again be able to hang with a team like LSU.bassjones wrote:Academics are a huge factor as well. ND can't even recruit 90% of the kids that go to LSU/Florida/USC/OSU/etc... Their recruits have to be accepted academically before Weiss can even offer a scholarship. Then they actually make their football players stay on target to graduate in 4 years. How many of the other top 20 teams do you think have academic regulations that strict? I'm guessing 0, unless Stanford has a good year.
Now, I'm no ND fan, but I do respect those standards and I think every school should do the same.

PUH LEASE!! To qoute Wiki...
Notre Dame has won 8 wire (AP or Coaches) national championships, more than any other Division I-A school.
The Notre Dame total wins (790) and winning percentage (.757) since 1900 is first in college football. The 821 wins in school history and the .744 winning percentage are both a close second to the University of Michigan Wolverines. (there's one for ya Bassjones!)
an unsurpassed 7 Fighting Irish football players have won the prestigious Heisman
Notre Dame has won more consensus national championships and produced more All-Americans than any other Division I-A school.
It has also produced the most All-Americans, including consensus All-Americans, and the largest number of players to go on to play in the National Football League of any program in the country. There are currently 36 former Notre Dame players in the NFL.
Notre Dame is also represented by 46 players and coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame, the most of any university.
It took from 1887 to 1924 to win their first National Cahmpionship. After the 1930 Nat. Ch. it was another 13 years before the next. After the 1949 Nat Ch it was 17 years before the next. Then another 16. After 1977 it was 11 years. With a man like Weis and his recruiting capabilities, you'd be a fool to think that they were "out of the National scene".
Notre Dame has had losing seasons and winning ones. They've gone long stretches without a Nat. Ch. They're also one of, if not THE most recognizable program in the country. They will ALWAYS be on the national scene.
Oh. By the way. I am a Notre Dame fan.

I was about to say something similar: Look up Notre Dames history of records, wins, championships, All Americans and other great feats. Then look up your favorite teams...then go ram your head through a wall for thinking ND sucks because they've had a brief struggle with a bunch of kids that don't get thrown in jail, and aren't dumb as a box of rocks. Though I've heard Joe Montana could barely read when he was there...
I remember when I was a kid and Jalen Rose of the fab 5 was at a drug bust. He alleged that he was "only playing Nintendo." Whatever became of that? I was only 10, I don't really remember. haha.

He lived in Detroit... DEA could run a drug bust at every other house in the city 4 days a week. He wasn't involved in anything illegal.
ND lives in the past. They can't compete at the National level anymore.

Bassjones:
Michigan has a tremendous football program. They are one of the most consistent as far as being in the top 25 at the end of the year, almost every year. I have no problem admitting that. Why is it that you have such a hard time admitting the same about ND. Over the last 50 years, UM is only 6 ahead of ND as far as final top 25 rankings (42 to 36). Yes, UM has had more recently than ND, and is more consistent, but that in no way means that ND is 'OUT'. Michigan had THE football program for a very long time when the sport was first around. They too, like the ND of the last decade or so, fell off of the National "level" for a while. They are now back (and have been for a while). So are we.
Bassjones, you said yourself that while you are no ND fan, you can respect their academic standards, and that every school should do the same. But at the same time, you thump your chest and say "I AM MICHIGAN FAN! ANYONE BUT MICHIGAN SUCKS MY BALLS!" That's like the dip stick you see on TV whose team is down 94-36, and he's yelling into the camera..."We're number one!". Are you, like, emotionally unable to respect anything but UM and their accomplishments?
I am POSITIVE that there are a TON of teams in this country that would be elated with a top 25 finish, let alone the No. 11 ND is sitting at right now. Last time I checked, that was decidedly ON the national scene. Oh, unless, for some reason, your version of the "National scene" only includes the top 5 teams in the country.
I'm pretty sure the other 20 teams may have something to say about their not being "on the scene".

I'm just giving ND fans crap. No foul intended. I do respect their academic standards, but I also believe those will likely keep them from truly competing for the National Championship in the current system. No one else cares about academics. It restricts their recruiting a great deal. Where they're currently lacking the most is overall team speed. Well, the 4.3 40 guys with the 1.5GPA are all going elsewhere. It's tough to find a 4.3 40 guy with a 3.5GPA. And ND's not going to get all of those guys.

That's fine. Just sticking up for my boys. What bugs me is the whole "not on the national scene" thing. Take Tiger Woods, for example. If he DOESN'T win, something is wrong. If he doesn't win a few times in a row, it's a slump. While I agree that ND has been out of the National Championship picture for a while, they are most certainly not, nor will they ever be, out of the national scene.
By the way, one reason I'm such a big fan...I taught the drumline there for the '96 and '97 seasons. Great time! When the ND defense sacks the quarterback, listen closely to what the drumline plays...it's ONE, from Metallica (you know, where Lars is going crazy...dagada dagada dut dagada dagada dut dagada dagada dut dagada dagada dut dut...I arranged that and gave it to them. It is now a ND tradition {insert self pat on the back here}).

So ND lives in the past and can't compete at the national level anymore? They're 4 and 4 against Michigan in the last 10 years. Can we say the same about your team then?
