Hello All,
I'll give a go at introducing myself. I am Kevin Hiatt, a composer/songwriter, teacher, guitarist, active in the Fort Wayne scene since May 2001. Like many musicians I moved to FW to work for a certain company
in town, when that didn't work out well there I was, a new guy in a medium sized town. So I started hitting the open mics, playing the occasional gig etc. The day job has been working in our fine public school system as a substitute teacher.
Since moving to FW I have released two cd recordings-
Another Look at the Sunrise(2001) and Strange Ships on a Blue Horizon
(2005). Strange Ships was recorded entirely in FW at Ozone Studios
and features several local musicians. Primarily I'm known for my instrumental work on 6,7,12 string guitars. My style is somewhere between Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges. While I've taken a few hits over time for my singing I do persist in it, feeling that at least my diction is good enough you can tell what I'm saying(at least on my recordings) , and try listening to some later day Dylan if you think my singing sucks!
Check my website at kevinhiattmusic.com for soundbytes and free MP3/sheetmusic downloads.
Currently besides my solo act I have two different duos that I work with. The Hiatt-Ford Duo combines my solo act with Brandon Ford on various assorted hand percussion. Brandon is a great musician and gives my music an added groove. The Hiatt-Martin Duo features Gary Martin
on pedal steel guitar. Gary is a Nashville quality steel guitar player and a walking human jukebox when it comes to classic country music.
Together we cover old style country i.e. Hank Sr, early Cash, Bob Wills, etc. Country swing, honkey tonk, surf tunes, and even what I call 'hippie'
country,i.e. CSNY, The Byrds, and even a few of my own tunes.
Americana music in the broadest sense of the word is a good description of what we do. Look for gigs in August at Paulas and other venues in FW.
I am also one of the few composers in the area of serious concert music or what is at times called'new music'. Last year I gave two concerts of my chamber music, i.e. string quartets, violin and piano,
at the Allen County Public Library in downtown FW. I am lucky to have various members of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic as my friends.
Look for more concerts of this type in the future once the library moves to its new location in 07.
Well thats about it. Any questions? If not I'll see you out on the gig.
thanks to all who read this.
