Radiohead won't have an album in stores until 2007, but fans don't have to wait that long to hear new music from the band's frontman. Thom Yorke has just announced plans to release a record of his own ... just don't call it a solo record.

Rather, call it The Eraser, a collection of nine songs penned by Yorke and produced and arranged by frequent Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich. It's due in stores July 11, and, no, it does not signify some sort of rift within the hallowed halls of Radiohead.

"Yes, it's a record. No, it's not a Radiohead record. As you know, the band are now touring and writing new stuff and getting to a good space, so I want no crap about me being a traitor or splitting up or whatever," Yorke said in a statement. "This was all done with their blessing, and I don't wanna hear that word 'solo.' Doesn't sound right. The elements have been kicking around now for a few years and needed to be finished. I have been itching to do something like this for ages."

According to Yorke, the songs on The Eraser are "more beats and electronics, but [still] songs," and the album will feature artwork by his good friend, artist Stanley Donwood — the man behind much of Radiohead's album art since 1994. Yorke has even launched a spooky new Web site, TheEraser.net, to promote the project, though there is no mention of a possible solo tour.

That's probably because Radiohead are currently on tour in Europe, which they will follow with a month of theater gigs in North America. And once that tour is wrapped, Radiohead will return to the studio with producer Mark "Spike" Stent, to continue work on their still-untitled seventh studio album.

Billboard and pitchfork (and now me) are reporting that "black swan" will be used for the closing credits of the Richard Linklater film A Scanner Darkly. Yorke's not solo record will be the second not solo album released by a member of Radiohead following Jonny Greenwood's soundtrack to the film Bodysong a few years back.

A couple of Saturdays back, we caught wind that Yorke was planning his first-ever foray into, um, solitary territory ("i don't wanna hear that word solo," the man wrote in a W.A.S.T.E. e-mail), on a forthcoming album to be titled The Eraser. And now, we've had the distinct pleasure of hearing the album in its entirety. The Eraser is a sumptuous, Nigel Godrich-produced layer cake of plaintive piano, haunting synth squalls, and chugging guitars built atop skittish programmed beats and devoured by Thom Yorke's anguished ruminations on the pressures and paranoias attendant to fame and expectation. And no, it's not a techno record.

Here's a track-by-track first glimpse at The Eraser:

1. "the eraser": The title track opens with a muffled, repeated piano chord. After a few bars and a chord change, programmed beats settle in, and Thom interrupts, "Please excuse me but I got to ask," scraping the upper register. Soon, a gaggle of disembodied, moaning Thoms joins in for the chorus, which seemingly takes a cue from Morrissey: "The more you try to erase me/ The more that I appear".

as the details of this album have just finally sunken in, i've found myself to be really excited. over a thom yorke album. excited over thom yorke.

is something wrong with me? it better be good.
