.im interested in those wwjd bracelets.
yeah i know its a few yrs on from when they were really huge - people worship testicles and bicyclists now - but a few yrs ago - jesus was the man and everyone wanted to know what he would do - how would he handle certain situations ... this puzzled me for many reasons ... mostly due to the fact that anyone who was wearing one of those things would more than likely have some sorta interest in jesus ... and more than likely - they were believers - they believed in jesus ... belief in jesus takes faith - since (last time i checked) hes not walking on earth anymore ... so why then did they have these ridiculous things dangling from their upper limbs? (the most absurd accessory since those black jelly things that chad allen and the two coreys wore in the eighties) ... if they believed in jesus - why would they need some sorta strap? was it akin to placing string round yer finger to encourage yerself from forgetting to pick up milk on the way home from work ... did they get halfway thru their day and look down and see those letters ... suddenly shaking off the fog and remembering - i love jesus ... i wanna do stuff that he would do - if you need some fabric round yer wrist - maybe you dont really have faith after all - maybe you dont truly believe in the first place (are we to believe that these things transfer faith ... some sorta new fangled fancy transfusion - or a faith osmosis if you will - the longer you wear it - the more you will believe ... maybe thats what they were all about - i doubt it ... thats a lil too science fiction and we all know the bible aint fiction) ... so were the bracelets created to cause conversation (controversy)? if so i think it failed - for two reasons ... one: the whole thing with believers (as ive come to understand thru church - church camp - carmen concerts - 3abn(etwork) ... is that they love to talk - they love to tell the story (i think they even named a hymn that) - so they really shouldnt be hiding behind a tiny wrist decoration with 4 simple letters ... maybe they were shy - but then why would they be so bold as to wear something that speaks to the core of who they are - ponderers of jesus ways ... the second reason it doesnt figure that the bracelets were to bring about chit chat is a very human and real reason ... most people are scared off/freaked out by christians/followers of christ/believers - i mean - cmon - would you really wanna sit down and chat with pat robertson ... half of the fox news anchorpeople ... michael w smith? probly not - one track - kinda facist - bad hair ... not the most ideal way to spend any part of yer day ... i really have no idea where the idea came from for these bracelets ... and the truth of the matter is: i really wanna know ... im one hundred percent sincere when i say that more than anything - i wanna understand why these things even exist ... send me yer explanations - bc ... thats what jesus would do

I went through a phase where I'd go through a pack of those in two days. I'd wear them and then one by one take 'em off, chew on 'em until the little black flakes would come off, spit 'em out & then start on another one.the most absurd accessory since those black jelly things that chad allen and the two coreys wore in the eighties
People would come over & wonder what the chunks of chewed up black plastic were laying all over the house for.
But you were asking about the origin of the WWJD bracelets, eh? no clue

It's what I do typically, anyway.
And I don't carry it around with me.

Not to get overly philosophical with you, but...
What you typically do...is that because that is just you and the way you react and do things, or is it because of your religion...
I guess my meaning is, would you do the same thing regardless of what religion you practice (or not practice, but are associated with)?

Without derailing this thread....
I have always been raised around religion. I went to a parochial school for a few years and attended church, at my parents request.
I am a terrible Christian and I admit it. There are several posters on this forum that are much more schooled on the Bible and religion than myself.
I live my life by what I feel is right. Perhaps some of that IS because of my background, most of it is common sense for most people.
I don't preach, lecture, point fingers, judge people or make demands. I dislike 'organized' big business religion and for what it represents
I feel ( keywords: I feel) that the Bible is open to interpretation, and by some that is wrong I am sure. I should not be able to cherry pick the parts I like and disregard the other.
I returned to the Church for private reasons. I did not, and have not had any revelation and don't consider that I am born again.
Frankly even discussing this in person, or this forum is uncomfortable for me because of my position on some things and my naivete about religon.
I remarked about the B.I.B.L.E. acronym because it summarized a lot of how I feel in a sentence. Basic instructions.
I am offended to some degree when people bash another because they have faith. I humble myself because I do not have a solid understanding of the Bible and it's teachings. There are some who bash people with faith simply because it's cool or they have no understanding of the teachings too. I have no patience for that.
My faith is mine. It has helped me thru some issues and others thru thiers. It is never my position to tell someone without faith that they are wrong, and I certainly will not tolerate someone like that telling me that I am too.
The Golden Rule.
Help out a brother in need.
Do the right thing.
Pick your self up.
Respect all.
I didn't need a church to teach me this.

That gives me a much better understanding of your perspective, thanks!
I was raised Catholic, but I can't say that I am much of a Christian either. I occaisionally go to church, but that is due to family, not personal choice.
I agree with you about cherry picking...I think that is the main reason why I don't associate myself with a denomination...I too, have faith, and like you put it, its my own, doesn't really fall under any "major" classification.
For a while, maybe 4-5 years, I was really intrigued by Buddhist teachings and actually practiced Zen meditations for a while, but that was on my own, not organized or having a teacher...
I find that I have strong beliefs, but they change over time and I feel that any religion, somewhat forces you into a certain belief, or at least wants you to practice a certain way...me, I don't have what it takes to strictly or consistently practice any formal religion...maybe that makes me a "Religion Mutt"...
I don't know.
I like many of the teachings from many different religions and am all for a person finding one that suits them...just realize that one size does not fit all!
Anyways...seeing that you shared, I felt it was my place to share also:)

Okay, this has been dead for a while, but since I rarely come in this forum - no idea why, I just don't very often...
If you want a serious answer to the question where did the bracelets come from... It was a bunch of Christian high school kids who made them up after reading a book by the same name. It was actually an attempt to get away from the Right Wing Zealot form of Christianity and get back to basics. What would Jesus do? He'd feed the hungry. He'd spend time with the sick and dying. He'd take in the homeless. He'd love the sinner, he'd mourn with the mourning, he'd laugh with the rejoicing...
The bracelets were supposed to be a reminder - sort of like your string around the finger example, only with more meaning... Anyway, it caught on and became a sort of Christian fad - which is why I never wore one. It wasn't really supposed to be a conversation starter - now, the green Save Darfur rubber bracelet thingy I wear, that is supposed to be a conversation starter.
By the way, we're not all like Pat Robertson... and Michael W. Smith is actually a pretty cool person - I met him once and found him quite likeable. I spend most of my time hanging out with people who either don't believe or don't believe as strongly as I do. I don't feel it's my job to cram it down their throat either. If it comes up in conversation, I'll play my part in the conversation, but not in a Jerry Falwell sort of way. In fact, 1/2 of my current band members are Christians and 1/2 are not or if they are they aren't particularly zealous about it. We've discussed it at various times in adult sorts of ways and I think (hope) that the non-christians respect those of us who aren't. We all get along quite fabulously most of the time in fact. I think you'd find most of us are more like that than the other way.

I like what you posted, Ollie.
I was raised Catholic, attended CCD classes every Wednesday, went to that religion deal in the trailor next to the playground that got me out of kindergarden class, attended vacation bible school, my mom even "made" me teach sunday school....but I don't consider myself a Christian and never agreed with the majority of the Catholic church's teachings.
furthermore, I get somewhat offended when I leave somewhere (i.e. a restaurant) and the employees say "God Bless" instead of goodbye. I normally bite my tongue because I'm sure they mean well, but it irks me that people do this....maybe it's just me.

Well, Jesus would get busted by the cops as a loon-nobody believing he's the second coming. They cops would drop him off at the upper floors of Saint Joe's, after which he'd be released to a half way house.
