Hi, I'm me

Post by Mama Dragon »

I'm really bad at introducing myself, so I'll probably screw this up nicely.

I'm new to Indiana, moved here from MS after Katrina, grew up in FL, so this cold weather stuff is pretty new to me and snow kind of freaks me out (well, the idea of driving in it sure does). Then again, if you lived here your whole life and went down to FL and had palmetto bugs coming at you from the right and a hurricane coming at you from the left, I doubt if you would keep your cool too well, either, so I guess it all balances out.

I'm a fan, not a band member. I couldn't play a tune to save my life, and I can't sing. I'll show up, drink beer, and cheer on the band instead.

I'm kind of looking for places to go and bands to see, so suggestions would be welcome. I gear more towards rock/classic rock/alternative rock kind of stuff. General information on good venues would also be welcome, and I have some friends in bands in other locales that don't mind gig-swapping and teaming up, and as long as you seem to be a decent person who won't screw them over, I wouldn't mind putting you in touch with them.

If you have questions, I'll try to answer them.

uh.. classic rock might be a little be tougher for me to point you in the right direction.

but a very cool place to hang out at on any night of the week is Mid City Bar and Grill.

Sunday nights - Taj Maholics really awesome blues trio.
Monday nights - Open Blues Jam
Tuesday - Various local artists typically acoustic duos.
Wednesday - Hip Hop Night with Epitaph and Maurice
Thursday - The Matthew Sturm Band rocks the place.
Friday - Karaoke
Saturday - Live music

Oh, another place I like to go is Deer Park Irish Pub. It's small and intimate and usually has something going on all the time. It's a really intimate place and typically on the quiet side unless we (FWM.com) are in there.

LOL. Maybe I'll have to hit up that place some night when y'all are there. I don't get out much so I don't really know anyone to hang out with yet. I'm going to go to Kaysan's tonight to see PLOW, and if Supine or Ditch-23 manages to book some gigs out this way I'll find some way to make it to their shows.

I think the MS bands spoiled me, though. Now I have to get used to just being another member of the audience again.

The next time we (FWM.com) will have a show there will be on Cinco De Mayo for the Deer Park Sessions CD release party.

Might I suggest April 1 at Kaysan's Bar on Anthony? Two local guitar-based duos(Left Lane Cruiser and Doubleshot) will be playing from 10-2---classic rock and blues, original and cover tunes---slide guitar, Mississippi influences abounding.

You might like it......or not.

I've got a band from MD that would like to play in Fort Wayne, they're headed by the former guitarist from Jimmies Chicken Shack. Any advice on how to help them get a few gigs over this way?

I had an encounter with palmetto bugs when I was in Flordia for spring break!

I'll have to post my "palmetto bug rant" for you sometime, Sharkman. :) Those are some freaky bugs, and RAID does nothing to them (but Lysol Anti-Bacterial Kitchen Cleaner will kill them!). The farther south you go the bigger they get, too.

I lived for about a year in fl (some time back). Palmetto bugs never scared me but then again, I'm not afraid of a bit of goop on the bottom of my shoe. The cockroaches were a bit disturbing but I fended them off as well. What did freak me out was the size of some of the spiders I saw down there. I saw one on the side of my apt. that still haunts me sometimes. I remember spraying him with a can of raid (as he was hunting the tree frogs that lived by my door light) and he still kept coming. He finally fell off the wall and I grabbed a flashlight and chased him down but couldn't find him. I sometimes think that bastard is still after me.

You might be thinking of a different bug than the palmetto bug I speak of. The palmetto bugs are the GIANT FLYING COCKROACHES. And I've seen plenty stepped on rather heartily (with steel-toed boots) that survived. Had one that survived being A) knocked itself out on the window, then B) was stepped on - twice, then C) was set on fire using hairspray as a flamethrower. IT WALKED AWAY.

Hunting tree frogs? Was it furry? Sounds like a wolf spider.

Yeah, it was furry. If it was a wolf spider it would be the biggest one I've ever seen. It's leg span was a little bit smaller than a baseball.

Wolf spider is the only kind I can think of down there that is big, furry, and chases frogs. Banana spiders are big, but they're not furry and use webs instead of actively hunting.
