Country music fans?

Post by The_Dude »

Does anyone here enjoy ANY Country music?*

Personally, I don't get into most of the new crap these days, but I do enjoy the following on occasion along with various/random classics:

Merle Haggard
Waylon Jennings
Hank Williams (Jr. & Sr.)
Garth Brooks
Johnny Cash
Willie Nelson
Randy Travis
Alabama
Tennessee Ernie Ford
Ronnie Milsap

...and of course, I love bluegrass!

* I know some people don't consider it to be "cool" or anything. I grew up hating Country music because I was exposed to it so much as a kid and I wanted so much to hate it. It wasn't until the past year or so that I started listening to it again. I thank my grandparents for exposing me to Country/Bluegrass/Gospel music at such a young age. Listening to it now reminds me a lot of my childhood.

Ditto! I love old Country and modern twang. Hate the country equivalent of boy bands and teeny bopper pop princesses with a passion. Although that Carrie Underwood girl is gorgeous.

Agreed - I love Nickel Creek, O Brother, and some of the other Newgrass going around.

Country radio? Two minutes of it and I'm looking for a sharp object to jab into my eardrums to stop the agony!

I can relate to that story dude. My family also buried me in country as a young chitlin and I HATED it. I had an older step brother who in third grade introduced me to Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motley Crue and the like and I grew up pretty much metal all the way, progressing heavier and heavier as I aged. When I got older I heard some of the Willie, Waylen, Johnny, Merle etc again and fell in love with the songwriting. I still cannot stand the crap pop country of today though. However, I do love a lot of the "alt country" like Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Slobberbone, Old 97's, Drive By Truckers, Todd Snider etc... I dig bluegrass too now when I hear it, but I can't name any artists that I am really familiar with.

I listened to country growing up and still do appreciate it and have had the chance to record on some country albums in Nashville(two tracks on a national that was later shelved...damn them!!) . I prefer the older stuff but I really dig some of the new artist out now. I actual have Rascall Flatts tickets for their show coming up...but they are for my better half, she wanted to go. I think they are good comapring them to most of the stuff out and she LOVES them. Still $80 EACH ticket is rediculous...rather go see locals for $5-10

Would James Taylor be considered country? He is the reason along side Kansas I play music...I would think more folk but I also dont understand the "core" genres either.
