If you want to see trendy music you're right. For American/Alt. Country go to Kaysan's 5th Down which is now featuring such music at least one night a week. There's also O'Sullivans - A Fort Wayne cultural treat in and of itself, let alone all the great bands that play there on any given weekend, including Action Jackson (funk), North River Agents (my former band, but I still think they're GREAT at what they do! - Americana), various punk and metal bands, etc... Don't forget Mid-City Grill, Buckets, various blues clubs, Club Soda for jazz, etc....
