Not a slam, just my observation.
Nah, that was just a side benefit

And, we're not all conservatives. If we tried that we'd be without our incredible fiddle player (who voted for Dukakis!!!) and the banjo man...
plus.....it's NoRA, as opposed to NRA, which makes all the difference, right?
yeah, NRA was already taken. it was kind of like WWF.

We hadn't yet settled on a name, when we met someone in Oxford, Mississippi who was affiliated with Fat Possum Records. We gave him a demo, and had to have a name to accompany it. The entire trip we were surrounded by "Merge Left", and "Left Lane Closed" signs. With all things considered, it only seemed right that we be named Left Lane Cruiser.
Funny, I always kind of thought that the LLC noted at the end of a lot of business names (meaning "Limited Liability Company" (or maybe "corporation"...i don't know) had something to do with it. I was wrong.

The wombat part of our name just came from a list of about 200 potential names that we all came up with, very unglamorous. Darren suggested adding the I for an extra syllable (sp?)...and a nod to Asimov, as we are all nerds.

My "band" consists of the same people.

This Land Laid to Waste- based on biblical prophecy of the fall of man, and mass death and destruction at the hands of natural disaster.

The Sods took our name from Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash a phrase meant to describe life in the royal navy and an album by The Pogues. There was a band in Michigan called The Lash from the same. We just assumed someone took the rum part. Turned out there was a semi famous European punk band named The Sods too. A lot of websites get our songs mixed in with theirs.

The name Them Ashtray Lickers came from a discussion on the flavor of Marlboro Lights. Yes, ashtrays were actually licked just to prove a point.

I have no idea where The Shithouse Boys came from. I think someone just thought it sounded cool. I was partial to The Vidalia String Band, but oh well.

The 1947 California Cupcake Company is a name modeled after an obscure 60's bubblegum pop group called The 1910 Ohio Fruitgum Company. We selected the year 1947 out of a hat, chose California to sound exotic, and company came naturally. The cupcake part was harder. Originally we were set to go with fruitcup, but then decided any band with just two guys as members should probably avoid references to fruit. We watched Yellow Submarine one night, while still vexed by our naming problem. There is a scene in which Ringo runs across a bridge and exclaims, "Look! It's one of those unidentified flying cupcakes!" We both looked at each other and yelled "Cupcakes!" and a legend was born.

Afflicted No More- I found the word "Afflicted" on a website, and was thinking of a word that would go with "Afflicted", but a word that was the opposite of it. So then I came up with "No More", and thought it sounded good after "Afflicted".

Akan word meaning "learning from the past and building for the future." I thought it described my situation quite well and would be an esoteric enough reference to qualify as unique. I was mistaken.

My duo with Maurice Turner came about when on the spur of the moment we decided to do some tunes together at an open talent night hosted by Potts, Ross & Miller (Three-O Huxtable). The second time we tried it out, Phil Potts introduced us, and gave us the name Ebony & Cherokee, we liked it, the crowd liked it, and there you are, and we have Phil Potts to thank !

We decided on NURSE because it's a simple, memorable (good or bad), and comforting word. Which defines our music, except maybe for the simple part. We do not have a Nurse fetish, think about nursing babies, or nursing a beer. Though we did so cleverly nickname the house we lived in "the nursing home". That threw off a lot of people.

We also realized that most of our favorite bands had stupid names, so it was OK if we had one that people thought was stupid. I mean, Tool? Radiohead? The Beatles? Those names suck! But the music is great. :)

I wish someone from D. Gary would get on here and describe to me where it came from.
Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you.

One could only presume, but how about this: you're driving back home after a gig in Chicago and the windows of the van are rolled down a crack. You hit this town and a stench rolls through the window and one of your band mates snoozing in the back wakes ups and yells "what the f**k is that smell?" You reply, "its Definitely Gary."

Well anyhow thats where I thought the name could have come from!
