Alright, I'll gear up for you DBT aficionados to attack me as a clueless nimwit sellout as$hole, BUT --- wait for it --- I really like the album.

Granted, I never heard Dirty South, and only heard the Opera in passing. But I like this album, it's a good summer record, and reminds me of my old friend 'A.M' by a band called Wilco.

Re-listened to Dirty South and SRO this weekend and have to admit that they are both superior to the latest release in terms of unbridled grit and lyrical creativity. But the new album is good and there are some great moments---Space City.
My hands are as good to me as they've ever been
And I ain't ashamed of anything my hands ever did
But sometimes the words I used were as hard as my fist
She had the strength of a man and the heart of a child I guess
Good stuff.

dear C.N.S.A,

having not heard dirty south might explain why you think B&C is passable...

Ah....yes. Must pay closer attention to context. It's all about context is it not?

But what, truly, defines "sell out"? I'm curious. If a band introduces a few more hook-laden choruses and melodic lines that seem a little too "sweet" or "easy"or what not, does this in fact make them a "sell out" or are they merely doing something a little different? And what does it mean to be "experimental"? Brian Eno was experimental as was Frank Zappa and with mixed results---in my opinion.

Just throwing it out there for no good reason really. Ignore it and I won't be offended.

I think the definition of "sellout" is..

If you do something pretty cool and a few people love it you are awesome.

If you try to do something even better the next time and suddenly everyone loves it you are a "sellout"

The greatest example of a "sell-out" is the Goo Goo Dolls, here we have a pretty decent, grungy power trio from Buffalo. They write an acoustic ballad that is a hit and all of a sudden all they are doing is writing a different version of the same song. They make a sh*tload of money while losing any possible cred they once had with fans of older sh*t. Thats my best example.

No kidding.

People are shocked when I play something off their first couple of discs and they are a loud, fast, sloppy punk band.

It's like they are two different bands.

I like this sellout discussion, and 'echosauce' is dead right.

For what it's worth, I brought up the 'sellout' word not to describe the DBT's, but to jokingly describe what I figured I might get called for liking their "slick" new disc. Which, by the way, I like even more today than I did the day I posted that message.

Locke -- I like your thinking, since I haven't heard Dirty South -- but be careful, you might start to sound like those Pavement fans who attacked me for loving Malkmus's first solo album when I had never heard Crooked Rain (at the time).......

ill continue with the abbreviations...

anytime the word "pavement" is brought up...well, it's a big can of worms with me. personally, upon going back to the sxmx solo album, i think it might be better than crooked rain...as much as i like crcr, i think it gets a little too much credit (rolling stone gave it the sacred 5 star review).

"dirty south" however, is an absolute monster...not much is touching it in the past few years IMO. when's your bday, matt? youre getting DS.

...and yes, i was kidding with the c.n.s.a. thing...matt knows that though :)

I love this banter, this is my favorite thread since that one guy trashed on my band and then never showed up again.

Anyway, GL -- I know you type with a smile on your face, as do I -- and my b-day was Feb 23 but I always accept late gifts, I am a gentleman after all. How about a trade? I know the best band you have never heard of, I promise.

PS to any band that David Sumner loves -- do not change, or he will grow to hate you. Just ask Josh Rouse or the DBTs. It is now apparent why Sumner never liked Wilco. But take heart! He may love you again, after he hates you for changing, if you kinda change back. Just as Ryan Adams!

Anyone see Tom Russell on 'Letterman' last week? Holy crap that was a brilliant song. Holy crap.

hearts,
MSK
