Anyone digging the new Tom Waits release yet? While being a self professed Tom Waits junkie, my opinion may be biased, but I think he is as brilliant as ever on this one.
30 new tunes, a few soundtrack cuts, a handful of covers and some just plain bizarre offerings round this one out. Upon first listen, I found myself saying "yep, thats Tom. Good, but more of the same stuff." After a week or so of really digging in, the gems start to shine on this collection. I am finding myself going back to the Bawlers disc more so than the other two.
The second track on Bawlers, "You can never hold back spring", is Tom in top form. The band sounds great, and I love how the piano on this one is ever so slightly out of tune. It really creates a mood. The hobo ballad, "Bottom of the world", on Brawlers, is another high(low) point for me.
Damn, I wish I could write songs half as good as that guy.
