What? I bought a wonderful 12" Wuhan China @ GC for a whopping $13 . . . and was it worth every penny!

I'm interested to hear of a dealer that you had a good experience with.

Why would I want to throw away a decent deal from a local merchant, just to drive down the street to let Walmart "match" their price? Of course GC is the cheapest- they've worked real hard to run all of the mom and pop shops out of town, and they would run em' all out of the country if they had their way about things. No thanks, I'll do business locally, no offense. Good luck.nonamehero wrote:and i will tell you this... if you come into our store and find something cheaper anywhere else we will match the price.. oh and p.s. do an idiot check before you leave the house and this problem will never occour. the fact that you are in a hurry is not the problem of the music store that you go to... and honestly they were just telling you the truth. and not pulling any punches about the product you were interested in.. i will gladly on any day of the week and twice on sunday tell you that a gibson les paul is a much better guitar than an epiphone les paul. that is just fact and the fact that the music stand you chose was not up to par then so be it
and as far as gc being the walmart of guitar shops... who cares tell me that you have never bought stuff at walmart.. that is stupid.. why do people shop at walmart? it is because they have products for cheaper than most other retail outlets.. it is the same with gc just with musical instruments . GUITAR CENTER IS THE CHEAPEST MUSICAL INSTRUMENT STORE IN THE NATION PERIOD

Not to be a d*ck but most of us already know Gibson is better than Epiphone.
anyways, all that aside,
Is cheaper really better?
Do you offer support after the sale?
Other than price, what is my motivation to buy from GC as opposed to a local store? Do you offer tech support? Will I get hasseled by some obscure return policy? Can you repair my gear if it breaks in a reasonable amount of time?
I'm not trying to poke w/ a stick, just looking for a reason why I should shop there.

Wow, is someone feeling a little defensive?nonamehero wrote:oh and p.s. do an idiot check before you leave the house and this problem will never occour.
Do you feel better now?
I never thought to get on my new fangled eelectronic number machine and find out what a music stand costs. Thanks for the hot tip!
Clearly, my point about polite, decent customer service flew right over you head.
I will say this about Guitar Center. I go through aluminum Easton drum sticks pretty quick and they have a 60 day warrenty. Instead of making me send them back and waiting 6 weeks for another pair, they always exchange them no questions asked and they are 30 bucks a pair. No mom and pop shop is going to do that for you.
"Guitar Center sucks, yet
They grow and grow.
How do they do it?
We don't know."
Here's what you've got going in this thread:
A forum member says that Guitar Center sucks because he feels that a GC employee sassed him. As is mandatory in all online fora, this story is taken as fact without question or corroboration (I'm not accusing anybody, this is just how we make friends - someone says something and if we want to be his friend we agree with him) - and now it is accepted as fact that "Guitar Center Sucks Because Its Employees Sass People And That's Bad Business."
Perhaps the clerk was impolite. Perhaps Hutnick simply misunderstood his intention. Perhaps Hutnick went on and on about the flimsy music stand until the clerk finally went humanoid and told him to buy a better one if he hated it so much. Maybe Hutnick is one of those people who is always looking for an opportunity to feel slighted (his opening sentence could be interpreted as such). My point is, no one posting to this thread really knows what happened or why.
The truth is that human beings work at Guitar Center and at B-Sharp and Music Star, and they all behave in pretty much the same way. You think you have to check your integrity at the door to work at GC? C'mon... I've stood in both Music Star and B-Sharp, both fine establishments, and heard the principals of both stores tell outlandish lies to newbie customers without batting an eye.
Guitars are poorly set-up at GC? Golly, how 'bout that... I've picked up $2K guitars at Music Star that were unplayable measured by my yardstick, and ended up buying a bargain PRS Soapbar II at GC instead of the Les Paul DC I was lusting for because the yellow Lester at B-Sharp needed a fret dressing.
My point is that anecdotal evidence doesn't mean much. My experience at GC has been that everyone who works there is friendly, eager to please but not crawling me, upbeat and ready to make a deal. I can walk in and grab what I need or hang out and have some stupid fun.
And seriously, is it fair to slag the crap out of subset of people, and when one of them gets hostile about it, tell him he's getting "defensive?" Well, of course he's defensive! You're telling the world that he and his kind are evil scum! WTF do you expect?
When you go to work at GC, you don't become a nightmarish droid: you're just another guy working for a big company... like Applebee's with guitars. Whether or not their "bigness" is a good thing is open for debate - but even though it's wildly popular to pitch slings and arrows at the broad side of a barn that is Guitar Center, they keep growing. Which would indicate, as sharkmansix pointed out about McDonald's in another thread, that they must be good at what they do. And that's no anecdote.

it is funny that you used the applebees reference because before i got my job at gc i was a server at applebees for 2 years...haha.
okay here is the deal.. i will try to make responses to all that has been said here..
first off i am not getting "defensive" as you would call it. i am simply defending my employer from the slanderous allegations that have been made in this post. as it stands so far i really enjoy working at guitar center i enjoy the fact that i am around some of the best musical instruments known to man and the fact that i go to work and i get to work with musicians because just about everyone that works there is in a band. and i get to talk about guitars and amplifiers all day long. and get paid for it . it is almost like a dream come true. the only better thing that i can think of is being able to actually play music for a living.
okay now to the issue of our guitars not being set up properly and our tech support. well first off have you seen how many guitars we have in that place. we have over 1000 guitars on the wall and almost as many in the warehouse. we also get anywhere from 50 to 200 guitars that come into the store a week. even if there was a guy that did nothing but set up guitars all day long he still could not keep up. we do the best that we can. we are required each shift we work to set up, restring, and clean at least 2 guitars a day. i don't it doesn't seem like much but between that and the other stuff that we have to do everyday it can be overwhelming. not to mention the fact that we are helping customers too. and besides if we took all this time to set up guitars then that would just give you more fuel to complain about us because then you would say that we are not helping the customers because we are too busy setting up guitars. so really we just can't win here.
Tech support. yes we offer it we will set your guitar up we will tune it we will restring it. hell just the other day i had a lady come in just to have one string replaced on her sons guitar and i was happy to do it.. so yes we do offer tech support. and we are happy to do it.
Our Return Policy. our return policy is definetly no hassle. if within 30 days you are unsatified with a product.. bring it back with the original reciept and the original packaging and recieve a full refund. after 30 days it is up to a manager but i'm sure they have no problems if the reason is ligit.
And lastly "check my integrity at the door" what the hell does that mean. I don't believe that i lost any integrity bu taking a job at gc. the work is awesome the pay is good and the people are really cool. I would so rather do what i am doing than work at some factory or a restaurant. Integrity, i just don't understand where i lost it. but whatever

Ok i dont normally get into these pissing matches but I think I would like to add my 2 cents.
I buy little items at GC, that dont cost much anywhere. ( harmonicas, picks, ya know little things. ussually scince i am from ohio when i play a gig in fort wayne i have had to stop some where and replace a harmonica or get a chord or sum shi*t. GC is open late and accessable because most local stores on a friday night or saturday are closing rather early.
I personally have not had a salesperson that wasnt pushy or ignored me or treated me like i was ignorant. I am a very crass, in your face, dont have time for attitude. When i walk into spend over a grand and i am treated like i am buying a bag of picks for 1 dollar ( eh i dont like that... remember the costomer is the reason you stay in buisness. and if you think that this forum will lower buisness at GC.... wake up .... because there are alot of people that dont know enugh about what they are buying and they will goto a Wal Mart style store cause it is convenient.) but still i go in with a heads up attitude ready to have a good time and the 5 times i have been there i have been treated like a second class musician. and no matter if i am or not, i should be treated like a first class musician.
I do have examples names and all to back this up.. no matter there will always be people that like the Wal Mart feel to guitar shopping and the people that dont.
If it is not an emergency i will wait ... no musicians friend, no sam ash, no online stores, I will wait untill i can reach a local fort wayne shop. There are several to choose from and i shop at almost all of them... well ok i lied, i have only about 3 that i goto.
When i buy lumber or windows i dont goto lowes or menards i visit the local lumberyard and pay less now ( due to gass prices ) and get much better down home service.
Being from the time when Big chain stores killed most small town buisnesses. I still prefer to buy from an individual that has been around scince before chain stores. ( i dont give a rats arse if i have to pay a little more That "local" feel and support )
Anyway, as for Hutnic being a slanders terrible person for posting his views, experiences, and stories..... well I have played with Hutnic and chatted with him and know that he is a pretty good dude and obviuosly took an arse f*ckin from GC.
To close this pissing match...... Hutnic... good job and thanks for the info on GC.... i agree with no need to buy from GC.
After all free speach and networking is what this is all about.
