Free Jazz
This may be a bit of a stretch for this area but here goes anyways. I am an acoustic bassist and have been a long time fan of the late 60's free jazz movement. I recently went to Detroit for the Jazz fest and saw a group from the area that absolutely blew me away and got my gears turning.
What I would like to do is find some like minded musicians to play with. This isn't the kind of music that I think would be good to rehearse due to it's nature. I would like to find 2,3, maybe even 4 saxophone players, trumpet, vibes, keys, percussion, drums etc. Maybe get together for a couple jam sessions and see how it works.
I'm thinking late Coltrane, B!tches Brew era Miles, Albert Ayler, Sun Ra, as well as modern sounds, other ethnic influences- whatever is different, that someone brings to the table- just as long as it's free and open to improvisation. Solid ideas and themes welcome, but save "Footprints" and "So What" for "Real Book" gigs.
I realize that with an act like this, gig opportunities in the area are very limited, but a project like this would be more for personal growth, fun, some out of town gigs, and maybe, if things clicked- recording.
If anyone has interest or knows of someone that would, p.m. me and we'll talk.

Take a swing by Club Soda and chat with the guys who rotate thru there.
Pick up a Whatzup and check out the jazz guys in town and have a beer and a sit down with them between breaks.
NPR local reads the 'Jazz Happenings' on the air everyday.
Horn players may be tougher...perhaps some of the guys in the Freak Bros.?
I get the feeling that you may need to chase down and convince players to join in on this.
Most (read=ALL) the jazz guys in town typically don't stop by here so it will be on your shoulders to find them.
Cool idea.

Or maybe they're more open to experimentation and less rigid about how things are supposed to be...

Deleted duplicate post.
There are 10 types of people in the world.
Those who understand binary. . .
. . .and those who don't.

What a show that must have been. Hey, if Charlie and LaFaro can co-exist why not an upright player and an electric bass??? Fretted or fretless.Free Jazz - 1960
