Holy crap people - sorry I asked! I had no idea proposing this would be such an issue. There was a time when I didn't own a studio and would have jumped at the chance to hone my recording skills - and yes, I have done many 'free' jobs just because I love playing and recording music. In fact, in 1984 I knocked on Sweetwater's door and told them I would work for free just to learn. So I was an assistant for about 10 months or so but that's just me. As my post read this song is 'for fun' - my own project, you know. Just to do it. No hidden agenda. And sure maybe you wouldn't do a project for 'free' but do you have to flame me because of that?

Regarding my services - I just recorded a Hardcore band this past weekend and here is the deal that I told them. I will do the first tune for a very minimal fee AND if they don't like it when it's complete I will give them their money back. I just asked for a little integrity on their part to be honest with me. Maybe, again, I am naive but I do still hold hope in people being honest. In addition to that - I ALWAYS give my clients more free hours than what they pay for. Why? Because I love it, I am passionate about music. I love the process. I love everything about it. So with that I want what ever I do to sound the absolute best it can.

And for what it is worth I would be happy to record anyone willing to come out and play bass on this project, as long as they can pull it off. I'll even include your travel time if you're in Fort Wayne - time for time, no big deal.

And for those that felt I didn't 'approach' this topic the 'right' way...or should I say, their way...give me a break.

Call me if you'd like to chat in person.

I don't think it was the proposition that was the deal, it was the way everyone took your request of a "professional for free". People on here take what they do very seriously, as you seem to, and they want to get something for their efforts.

I feel (and probably some others too) that this is how you should have approached the request for help initially. For someone so willing to help out a fellow musician, you'd think you'd have brought that up in your initial post, instead of your "so if you're new at playing or worse, recording please don't waste the time". This, I believe, is the comment that quickly turned people against the idea of helping you. Had you written the above quote in the first place, you'd have probably had your part recorded by now.

People, such as myself, Brad, Ollie, etc, aren't telling you how to do things. We're not saying it's the "right" way or even "our" way. We're trying to help out another musician on a forum. It can be far to easy to read into what someone is saying on here and instantly take offense and think that everyone is ganging up on you. I've done it myself. Just take what we're all saying as constructive criticism. Nothing more. If you feel like heeding the advice given, great. If not, great.

Just FYI, Cary and I worked this out via PM, so we're cool. I may even end up doing this. Nice guy, just people taking things out of context and reading things into posts that weren't there.

I do appreciate these comments. Yes, I didn't take a great deal of time sculpting my post so it would come across exactly right. It is slightly difficult to ask newbies (bass players) not to respond.

Anyway, since I feel we've drove this into the ground and then some I will step away from the conversation and continue on my quest to do the song.

It has been interesting...

Take care everyone!

Cary is incredibly talented and a great person to work with. He is a great vocalist and an amazing studio engineer.. and his studio is top notch. Many of you would be honored to work with him. The ad may have appeared a bit over the top but trust me when I say, even a pro would enjoy this free gig.
