Band, 4 or 5-piece, of really great older players desired

Post by 2manynotes »

I left for Los Angeles in 1974 for the second time. The first time I had studied the arts at USC from 1969 to 1971.

I stayed in L.A. until early 1991, and returned to my local hometown during a West Coast recession that bordered on a depression.

I played in many of the most successful local bands during the late 60s and early 70s, with great musicians like drummer Danny Howell of The Herd, saxophonist Mike Davis of Walden, lead guitarists Rick Ley of Wells St. Blues Band and Wil Sharp of Atlantis and Ethos, and many many other local legends.

I had had 10 years of classical keyboard lessons and 7 years of music theory at a time when most rockers were self-taught, and as a result I was hired on to the Surf Suns/Boston Creme Pie at the peak of their regional popularity -- I made a lot of pocket money, and had a ball doing it. I was even in the Musicians' Union Local 58 for several years, when many bands didn't find that necessary or beneficial.

At this point in time, I have humble but unshakable confidence in my ability to play, so I'm simply looking for a few players of approximately equal experiences who would enjoy knocking together a band and playing, as well as improvising, 3 or 4 sets of eclectic music in the local and regional scene, as often as we could get booked.

I need very talented players, and I DON'T need part-timers or wannabes or hobbyists with a lot of blackout dates or a limited commitment. Harsh, but accurate. If you're new and learning your instrument, bless ya but don't call. If you're very rusty on your axe, or have limited availability to book play dates due to family or other commitments, don't contact me.

I guess that narrows things down quite a lot. Fine and dandy. So let it be written: so let it be done. Will talk to really talented players who will happily play as much as we can book.

Skippy --

The lead guitarist in question had nothing but positive things to say about your drumming after the jam. I'm just not ready to jump yet.

I'm in very much the same spot as he is, being even more practical than in the past about my next venture. But based on our friend's comments I would not hesitate to jam with you if the right group comes along. I'm in no hurry -- because there is NOTHING worse than rushing into the wrong band at our age - as I'm sure you know by now.

I have you in mind and please keep me in mind.
