5-7-5 is in japanese syllables...it has been widely accepted that using other languages need not follow that guideline...and even in japan, it is only a guideline, although it was widely used in ancient times...

The idea for any haiku is to express something in the simplest way possible. Some purists may try to keep to a 5-7-5 and maybe if I was writing these in japanese, I would too. Others, try to simply keep under 13 (which is supposedly roughly the same english syllables as the 17 in japanese, or something). But again, the purpose of writing the haiku, expressing yourself in this form, is much more important than the syllable count. Just because something is in 5-7-5 does not mean it is a haiku!

You can find hundreds of rules and guidelines for haiku...follow one, follow a few, or not...the idea though, is the what's important, minimalistic expression...and that is the purpose of haiku...
