I don't usually post in the political section, but I wanted to get peoples take on Unity 08. Has anyone else heard of this? Thoughts?

I love the concept, and wish it could realistically succeed. But I doubt it will.

Numerous groups have popped up around 3rd party candidates for the past 4 or 5 elections, but nothing ever comes of it. (Though some would say that Nader's Green Party voters stole the election from Gore, I prefer to blame Katherine Harris.)

The current system IS broken. Given the debate I've been seeing over the immigration bill it would seem that both parties are completely out of touch with the way I'd like to see my country run. I normally consider myself fairly liberal, but I can't support this bill. Moreover, some liberal Democrats are arguing that the bill is too harsh on illegal immigrants. Ridiculous.

Our current crop of politicians seem to see every issue as black or white. They make no room for gray areas, and no room for common sense. It's a shame that come November 2008 I will probably find myself (once again) trying to choose the lesser of two evils.

From the little research I've done this looks like it could take off. I think they only want to do it of the '08 election and then go back to the separate parties. I caught a question and answer session on CSPAN.

The two parties have lost connection with the voters, so our solution is to have a split ticket with someone from each party as the Prez and Vice Prez? Sounds like more of the same. (The Twelfth Amendment already provides for this arrangement. That worked really well with Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.)

Why not just vote Libertarian and be done with it? ;-)

Some of the very reasons, causes like Unity08 get started.

Have heard of this, but like some of the other alternative ideas
tried in other years, the big money will rule the roost.

Kinda reminds of the Ross Perot run a few elections back.

Always wondered what would've happened if the
little "General" had been elected? :-k

I've never really looked at parties when I vote. I look at individuals. Or I try to. Do you think people would vote for a split ticket? I'm sure Unity 08 is aware of the Twelfth Amendment and is just bringing it to the forefront.

You think John McCain's nuts and Bush has gotten us into some ill-advised foreign policy positions; Perot makes McCain look sane and Bush look like Kissinger.

Except this is the country where more people vote for American Idol than for president.

Oh man, Jones, if the League of Women Voters sponsored a presidential debate that included the Libertarian and the Socialist candidates? They'd make the Republicrat and the Demopublican in the middle sound like watered-down fools. That's why it ain't gonna' happen.

See now, I think that is a result of this mess we're in and that if people had more real choices presented to them, more of them would vote.

global climate change, the corruption of Washington’s lobbying system, the education of our young, the health care of all, and the disappearance of the American Dream for so many of our people.
Listed as Crucial Issues... Assumes global climate change is happening (liberal), apparently wants nationalised health care (liberal), and believes that the American Dream is disappearing, when in fact, there are more new Millionaires every year in this country. The American Dream is very much alive and well and the only thing making it disappear is the lack of good news about all the people living the American Dream.

This is still the land of opportunity and if you don't take advantage of that opportunity it's nobody's fault but your own.

 Talk about re-defining fascist. Bush is an idiot, but he's no fascist.
