Um, I don't know the exact theory of the main character, but I believe the most widely accepted theory by historians is that THE Holy Grail doesn't exist as such, though there are probably a number of relics that have been called the Holy Grail.

That's his theory. . .

The theory is that there was no cup of christ. . .of course, if you'd read the book. . .you'd know that.

My lady and I went to see it last night and as we were walking in....protestors! My girlfriend says, "Jesus! Are you serious!" right as we walk past them and I busted out laughing because she didn't realize what just happened and what she just said. Anyways, I thought the film had some pacing issues, but overall was pretty good, I love me some Ian McKellen. I have not read the book because I read the first chapter and could not stand how stiff the guy's writing style was. The theories that are displayed are one's that could easily have been true, and were things I have speculated on myself. As we were leaving there were TV crews outside of Coldwater and they were grabbing people to ask them opinions and there were still protestors. As I walked by them and the people milling about in the ticket line I loudly stated, "I can't believe Jesus was ghey!" I got some laughs and there was a gasp of horror from the closest protestor, it was satisfying.

People used to believe that a round earth was nonsense also. . .and that it was nonsense that the earth revolved around the sun.

The theories are sound and are no less nonsense than the bible itself.

haha! That's awesome. I was hoping for protestors at the showing I went to, but I had no such luck. Damn Auburn for being boring.

sexy beast of a husband and i attended opening night at Rave. our pastor actually recommended watching so we would have frame of reference for the next few sermons..............which i found interesting......
no protestors, but a camera crew was soliciting interviews post.
i felt the casting was great.
the effects were good.
the action scenes were fewer and less violent than i remember my mind envisioning when i read the book.
but overall, a great piece of fiction work put to the big screen.
i wasn't let down, as one frequently is when comparing the book to the movie version. they did well in that arena.
certainly a great date movie.
the male lead is the character guys can identify with and want to be (clever, brave, etc.). the female lead is what ladies want (attractive, captivating, able to participate in the great adventure while holding her own).
i'd pay that $17 plus treats (popcorn, soda, candy- we went all out. the husband doesn't mess around when it comes to date night.) again, and recommend you do the same to see it on the big screen.
OK, on with production of Angels and Demons (which i found a better read than DaVinci Code)!

Um, the Bible isn't exactly widely accepted as a document of history. You might want to use something not under so much dispute, say The Declaration of Independence, for further comparisons.

And the "sangriel" stories didn't appear until over a millennium after the stories about Jesus were written. Just like the stories of Jesus's (or his family's) visits to England, Ireland, North America, etc. Even if the Priory of Sion existed outside of its 1956 incarnation (and historians come down disfavorably on that alone), it doesn't mean their premise concerning the Merovingian dynasty is true anymore than the stories of Jesus, Noah's sons, or Joseph of Arimathea visiting the British Isles.

For f**k's sake, the authors of Holy Blood, Holy Grail incorporate "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" into their arguments. That doesn't win you historical accuracy points outside of a few Fortean Times readers.

thank you for making my point. . .

i was making that comparison by trying to point out that 1/3 of the world (the 30some percent that are christian) believe in the bible which has holes in it left and right.

The theories presented in this book are no less fantastic than what the bible expects people to believe.

Well the movie was pretty good...there was that long sequence when there was little or no dialogue...I think it was near 40 minutes of the movie...

Then he was talking to that Volleyball the rest of the movie...but he did make it off the island and did manage to deliver that package to the farmhouse...:-D

heh...anyway...I thought Davinci Code was excellent...outside of the hype it did everything it was suposed to do as far as set-up and finish. Somewhere in the thread there is a question as to the sequence of cluse, but I didn't think it was overdone...

Now it is sitting at #2 all time worldwide boxoffice take...I wonder how much of that equates to hype and how much equates to a quality movie..:)

I also feared at 2:29 it would be WAY long, but I think it moved rather quickly.

All around I gave the movie a thumbs up...and it did the book justice.

You were originally making the point that the HBHG theory is widely accepted. I assumed you meant historians, among whom the theory doesn't even warrant enough attention to really be controversial. If you meant everyday laypersons, you should have just said so after my first response.

I much prefer that approach... Protestors are stoopid. I might add, I would recommend attending the church services that meet at Seeker's Coffee House on Sunday mornings for a balanced perspective. If I weren't so actively involved in my own Church I would likely attend that one. Either that one or mine might change your mind about churches...

when do you think that these protesting groups are going to realize that a quiet boycott produces FAR better results? They are driving attention and viewers in DROVES to the movie just so they can see what all the controversy is about. Doh!!
