The Israelis will probably take care of Iran before we have to. . .

The only thing stopping them now is us. They can handle themselves quite well and with far less restraint than we seem to have, which is what is keeping us from putting this baby to bed now. Take the handcuffs off our soldiers and we would have cleaned up the insurgency months ago.

Get the Iraqis to govern themselves and show some semblance of order and they could pack up and go home,

P.S. are we ever going to find Bin Laden

Not a priority. The task force constructed to do so was disbanded months ago.

Again, we should have figured out HOW to do that before ever declaring war on them. Whatever we planned on isn't working.

Here's the problem I've always had with Iraq - they don't want us there. I know, jones and I've already had this conversation in a different thread, with him maintaining that the vast majority of Iraqis love us and want us to 'liberate' them. But I'm not buying it. If such a great majority like us so much, then why aren't they making some effort to defend themselves (and our troops) against what is clearly small, isolated cells of resistance? The answer is clear. These aren't small isolated cells. This is a country whose population clearly wants us to leave, and will stop at nothing to achieve this goal.

Given this situation, I've always thought we had two options with Iraq.

Option one: Leave them alone. Let them all murder each other. They seem intent upon doing this anyway. Why do we have to be present as witnesses? Bring our troops home, out of the crossfire before one more American is killed as part of their local turf war. I already know the response from the conservatives - "If we leave them alone, a stronger, more sinister power-base will form in Iraq, eventually targeting the U.S. for terrorism and oher acts of war." I hear you, that's when we go to option two.

Option two: Bomb the country until it's nothing more than a crater. We have the technology to do this without troops on the ground. We have the ability to completely destroy Iraq without placing very many troops at all in serious danger. How many men did it take to fly the Enloa Gay? One, two? Multiply that by 10, and we'll leave Iraq as nothing more than a smoldering reminder of what happens when someone decides to screw with us.

But here's the thing. After we create the aforementioned crater, we stay the hell out of the Middle East for a long time. Bring the troops home, have them help defend our borders, and prepare for the next attack. Because unfortunately, terrorism is a reality today. No matter how many countries we 'liberate' or destroy, terrorism will still exist. If we concentrate our military might on stopping things like that here at home, then maybe we won't have to continue our expansive, expensive, 'War on Terror' abroad.
