I don't, and I'm not sure where to find the answer:
The Japanese dominate in the auto and personal electronics industries, but. . .
Why not in the aircraft industry? I only know of Mitsubushi, that makes small executive planes, but no airliners, private planes, or fighters? Was this part of the peace settlement of WW2?
I should know the answer to this, but. . . .

My ideas....
#1. Aerospace is an expensive business to get into. High risk, little reward. Without a government propping it up to keep it in business, you can end up in a big hole very quickly.
#2. With companies like Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Embraer, Dassault, etc; the competition is very high.
#3. You forget HondaJet, which will be in production in about two years. If any Japanese company can break the into aviation, it's Honda. They have partnered with Piper, which to me is almost a bad thing. They do need the aviation experience, but Piper has a number of issues with their internal corporate culture that will not mesh with Honda.
Aviation will only take off once...
#1. Fly-by-wire becomes cheap.
#2. Engines become cheaper (i.e. mass production)
#3. SATS comes online.
#4. Corporate liability is limited (i.e. can't sue a company because you were stupid and crashed a plane into a building showing off to your family.
The Japanese have not been great innovators, they are great engineers and find ways to lower the cost of production.
