Two Songs – Discuss

Post by =^-..-^= »

Rush - Something for Nothing:

Waiting for the winds of change
To sweep the clouds away
Waiting for the rainbows end
To cast its gold your way
Countless ways
You pass the days

Waiting for someone to call
And turn your world around
Looking for an answer to
The question you have found
Looking for
An open door

You dont get something for nothing
You dont get freedom for free
You wont get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be

What you own is your own kingdom
What you do is your own glory
What you love is your own power
What you live is your own story
In your head is the answer
Let it guide you along
Let your heart be the anchor
And the beat of your own song

John Mayer - Waiting on the World to Change:

me and all my friends
we're all misunderstood
they say we stand for nothing and
there's no way we ever could
now we see everything that's going wrong
with the world and those who lead it
we just feel like we don't have the means
to rise above and beat it

so we keep waiting
waiting on the world to change
we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

it's hard to beat the system
when we're standing at a distance
so we keep waiting
waiting on the world to change
now if we had the power
to bring our neighbors home from war
they would have never missed a Christmas
no more ribbons on their door
and when you trust your television
what you get is what you got
cause when they own the information, oh
they can bend it all they want

that's why we're waiting
waiting on the world to change
we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

it's not that we don't care,
we just know that the fight ain't fair
so we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

and we're still waiting
waiting on the world to change
we keep on waiting waiting on the world to change
one day our generation
is gonna rule the population
so we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

Talented people of a hardworking realistic nature earning their rightful place in the world vs- Someone who's been GIVEN everything.

So, what'd I win?

What, exactly, has John Maye been "given". The guy is a talented guitarist and a hit songwriter, as are the members of Rush. Don't get me wrong, I love Rush, but I have a deep respect for Mayer after he rleased his Live Trio album last year and showed the teenies his proper chops. His new album is a little too mellow for me to listen to all the time but its easily better than the last couple of Rush releases. But, again, you really cannot compare these two acts side b side like this.

As far as the lyrics go, I would actually compare an old Clapton tune to Mayer's song, I just cannot remember the name of it right now. Neil Peart is one of the most underrated rock lyricists of all time, though.

While I sincerely respect your opinion, I consider John Mayer to be grossly overrated. He's a great 'commercial' package I suppose- eye candy for the chicks, fluffy pop tunes got him there, not his "blues-roots" or whatever. Sure he's a good guitarist, so's Henry Garza, but all you hear about is his F'n hair. Meanwhile...
Neither is a zit on Joe Bonamassa's ass, but all I hear about him is how he plays here too much. WTF? Not purdy enough to play here every six months, where he became popular as a solo act?

Well yeah, I was thinking more on the lines of the two ways to face the world, not on the merits of Mayer or Rush. (Both of whom I enjoy.)

Smokin' Joe? Blues guys are a dime a dozen, or in Joe's case a nickel (get it?). There hasn't been a surprising worthwhile blues artist since SRV came out 20 years ago. And if anyone says Johnny Lang, I'll burn this place to the ground.

In the end, I can align with either song lyrically. The world does what it does, we see things we're powerless to change, and hope for the eventual opportunity to do something about it. At the same time, we take the cards we're dealt and hopefully make our own place in all of it.

I'm sorry you feel that way :( . On the common ground, Johnny Lang blows goats.

Most good music is in some way derivative of blues, but as 100+ year old genres go, the real virtuosos don't get the * by their names until they're gone. Just ask SRV.

...Or Robert Johnson, Roy Buchanan, Rory Gallagher, Hendrix, ..... you know, pick one.

I HEARD DANNY DEVITO PLAYS GREAT BLUES, TOO! ;-)

But, yeah, the above quote is a great synthesis of the two attitudes expressed.

That's all I should've said.

I just hear people say all the time that they are powerless to change anything.

If you believe you are powerless, you ARE powerless.

Let's add a 3d song to the mix:

With my own two hands - Ben Harper

I can change the world
With my own two hands
Make a better place
With my own two hands
Make a kinder place
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands
I can make peace on earth
With my own two hands
I can clean up the earth
With my own two hands
I can reach out to you
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands

Im gonna make it a brighter place
Im gonna make it a safer place
Im gonna help the human race
With my own
With my own two hands

I can hold you
With my own two hands
I can comfort you
With my own two hands
But you got to use
Use your own two hands
Use your own
Use your own two hands

With our own
With our own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands

Kenny Wayne Shepherd. . .
There are 10 types of people in the world.

Those who understand binary. . .

. . .and those who don't.
