Newbies Beware!!!

Everytime we played a legendary show, we got screwed somehow. Either there would be 6 bands playing at the last minute and we'd have to cut our set list down from 2 hours to 45 minutes, or there would just not be enough money to give the bands that played. Just know what to expect next time... if there is a next time.

ding, ding, ding, I think that's the one we are all thinking of. How is it they manage to continue booking bands? They are Legendary for that sort of thing, yet people continue to book shows there and beeoch about getting the lubricant-free-shafting every time it happens again.

Who HAS NOT been screwed over by Legends?

With no shortage of money, surprise charges, over booking and other such shady practices?

Perhaps if enough complain openly, someone, or something at Legends *might* be able to something about it. But you must tell someone there.

Why does it continue? Is it that these are young bands unaware and afraid to speak up?

Is it that these bands dont have thier business together and ALLOW it to continue?

What is it worth to say "No", or to get a simple contract put together?

$50..$100? How much did you get screwed out of the last time?

Ask for the payment details and write it up in advance, call back if you have to before the gig to re-confirm. Place your own person at the door and count the bodies yourself.

MAKE the bar manager sign it before you play. Or dont play.

I have NEVER been screwed by this Legendary venue. We have often made more money than agreed/expected and the only time we've had line-up problems was when WE miscommunicated with the venue.

Having said that. . .I have heard ENDLESS stories of how other people/bands have been done over by this venue. I guess I'm a happy exception.

The moral: beware.

Better yet would be to have someone from Legends discuss this here.

I would not want this to be a one-sided flame war.

I cant help but notice that the original poster (with a grand total of ONE post) has yet to follow up on his original post.

It is still operational because of..

1. New bands unaware of the way things run there.

2. It is one of the few places that will allow you to play heavy esq music (as far as bars go anyway).

Coming from someone who had the responsibility of booking there. There are some good points to legends along with the bad ones.

There isnt any other bar open to new bands like they are. Now this also allows for some really bad music to pass through the doors, but it does offer stage experience to new artists. That is very helpful let me tell ya.

The money situation boggles my mind, I have never understood it. We never expect to get paid when we play there. We just expect the bar tab and are overly surprised when we would be handed over $20. Which is amazing compared what other bars will pay us to play (some of you know what that is like).

All in all I just dont care, we have never been about the money, though it helps, some times its fun just to get to play and drink free beer. It only sucks in the begining before you know how things work there.

I didn't realize all bands care so much about money. We've played this joint quite a few times, and maybe we're stupid, but we're happy to get 50 or 75 bucks you know? We like playing, and we usually sell an OK amount of CDs. We've sold as few as 5, and as many as 15. Depends on the night, and the size of the crowd.

With that 50 or 75 bucks, we're getting ourselves a few hours in the studio, or paying for a chunk of our next cd order. Besides, there aren't that many local venues to be playing out at on a Friday or Saturday night in Fort Wayne. And personally I'd rather be playing a show to an OK crowd, for a bit of cash, than sitting at home typing on FWM.com.

It doesn't need to be in writing. If you have more than two witnesses at the time the verbal agreement took place, (which was the case at this particular 'verbal agreement'), then the contract is legal and valid. And these bands were told that they could not use their own sound guy the night of the gig, and so they had to resort to the venue's own sound guy.
Personally, I play music for the wonderful sake of------playing music. If money can be made, then friggin'A, I'm hopping aboard. The entertainers never broke their contract in any form. The venue misled and deceived the three bands and royally screwed them out of money to be made. Okay, enough of my cryassing. But beware of that specific venue.
