Bonsai Trees...

Post by The_Dude »

Anybody here have one?

I've wanted one since I was a youngster (thank you, Karate Kid!) and I'm looking to invest in one soon.

Any tips?

I don't have a bonzai tree, but I regularly trim the bush.

I know that basically ANY tree can be grown into a bonsai tree. I've done just a little research on them and that's about all the info I retained.

This is true but from everything I've read takes years. You're better off buying one that's already grown.
Most of it seemed to make some sort of sense at the time.

Ahhh...I was wondering that. I figured it would take a while.

Thanks for the info!

I'd recommend buying. I've had friends that have grown them, but to get the real Bonsai "look" takes a LONG time, and a ton of patience and work. There are places that sell trees that are anywhere from a few years to 75 years old and up, and range in price from $30 to $1500+. Best of luck in your search. Post some pictures if you get one.

Well, the "point" of a bonsai is the patience and the practice/work.

If you just want something that kinda looks like one, you can find small trees at places like Householder's, Geoglein's or other local nurseries around town...I see them every year and they are pretty cheap.

I haven't decided. I love the way they look but I'm trying to decide whether or not I do have the patience to grow one from a seed.

I'm leaning towards purchasing one that's 3+ years old...for my first one. Maybe I'll start from scratch for my 2nd.

Yeah..I would definitely get one that is a few years old and work with it. From seed will drive you nuts most likely...

You will grow tired of it before it does anything...:)

You should go see Roger the Shrubber. I hear he's got a great selection and he'll also help you appease any weird knights who may want you to chop down a tree with a herring. :D
