this is a serious question. Do you dislike Best Buy for particular reasons or because you are a small business owner trying to compete. I've never had a problem with best buy, other than the fact that they try to upsell like crazy, but then it's just a matter of saying no. I feel i got a pretty good deal at a good price.cwallace wrote:<sigh> When will this town learn NEVER go to Best Buy for ANYTHING. They are f*#king theives...
Owell...when it FAILS...and it will fail in time...get it to me so I can get it set up right.
Since you are probably running Norton because it came from Best Buy you really need to get that off of there soon. It will lead you to more problems than you could imagine.
I think I just need to do a theme around 969byte.com since people are missing the obvious...heh...

Lots of problems with Best Buy...I wouldn't say getting screwed by them is personal...they screw everyone. Their prices are not much better on thing than other places...They throw in a good deal on something then sucker you in on something else you don't need.poopstains wrote:this is a serious question. They run a LOT of misleading and false ads and then give some excuse as to why it isn't the same thing.
Their 'geek squad' is mediocre at best...$6 an hour tech guys??? You have to be kidding me. Their solution to everything is one of two things. FORMAT AND REINSTALL FOR $200 or BUY A NEW COMPUTER...they can't 'fix' anything on a computer.
$45 to toss a video card in? After you paid $135 for a $50 card? Outrageous...
Yeah I am bitter because I am a small business that has to compete with someone who had the money to lie to the sheep. That is only a small part of it though...I can't stand the other small shops that screw customers over either.
Now in the last year and half I have had 3 separate instances where Best Buy REFUSES to honor a warranty on an item that is covered by their policy. Two of them resolved after I corresponded with the manufacturer who reminded Best Buy they are OBLIGATED to exchange the item to the customer.
The third one is still being handled. Stems back to mid November, but will be resolved with Best Buy getting screwed in the coming weeks...
Crap like calling to get an answer about a problem with something I just bought and hearing the person on the other end of the phone say..and I QUOTE. "I don't care what he wants, just get him off of the phone"...This when I called to find out a solution to a printer issue that turns out to be the RESPONSIBILITY of Best Buy...Idiot didn't realize he just sat the phone down instead of putting me on hold.
I have found good deals there, but I have been screwed by them 3-1 I am sure. They do get some low grade crap in there as well. Stuff that would typically be sold as B-Stock in some places...
I remember when Best Buy used to be a good company...but they got too big for their own good and unless you are walking out of the place with a FREE item after instant rebate I would suggest shopping elsewhere and looking local.
Oh..and I forgot to mention...UN-TRAINED computer people. You shouldn't have to LIE to get someone to buy something...I can go in there and run through a series of simple computer questions and not get a single correct of straight answer...you can't work on or sell computers when you are just pulled off the street and thrown in the position. There is a level of skill that needs to be LEARNED with years of experience...
And formatting and starting from scratch is not ALWAYS the solution...

This is definately true, the monitor they had set up on the display was a 17" monitor, but the monitor it came with was 15". I could have the 17" for an upgrade fee, I passed. One of their big selling points was "buy this computer and have a gadget bar personlized and installed" I don't know d*ck about computers, I still passed and with in two minutes on Google I knew how to load the Gadget bar.
If I have computer troubles that can't be resolved through my warranty I'll keep your company in mind, assumin your here in Fort Wayne or near by.

I agree with the whole "Best Buy" people do not know sh*t about computers. First off, I use macs and love them, but I realize they are not for everybody. My mom wanted a new computer. I tried to talk her into a mac (because that is what I am familiar with so I would be better able to help her on it) but she wanted windows because that is what she knows. Fair enough. A computer after all is not much more than a hammer. Use the tool you like to use. So, I took mom into "Best Buy" to let her see what was out there, what she wanted and what she wanted to spend. The salesmen were VERY over pushy. They kept trying to sell her on sh*t she did not need, did not want and imho, did not know their ass from a hole in the ground. I had to explain five times within a half hour we were just looking. As if that wasn't enough, I had a manager follow me around through two cd aisles asking me why we did not buy a computer. My mom basically told him to f**k off. I finally had a friend of mine build her a pc for a fraction of the price (yeah, I'm a mac guy but he knows the pc and has my trust) and she is totally satisified with it.

Yeah I have offices here in Fort Wayne...they are the FortWayneMusic offices also...
My standard questions/processes are:
What do you want to do with it?
Then I show you what upgrades are available and why they MIGHT suit your needs now or in the future if you wish to upgrade.
Then I ask how much you want to spend.
I use those items to decide a processor base, MB model/brand, case type, and so forth.
A standard box will consit of:
2.8-3.2 Ghz CPU (Either brand)
512-2GB RAM
DVD-RW
250-300GB HDD (SATA or IDE depending on MB)
19" Flat Panel monitor
All nicely packaged in a 'gamer' case w/500 w PSU.
Win XP PRO
Office XP 2003 (w/publisher)
Super Suite (Security and protection)
1 year parts and labor
Comes to around $699 complete and ready.
Options include:
Sound card (PCI) $25-$75
Graphics card (AGP or PCIE) $45-$175
7-1 card reader (w/floppy [instead of a floppy only]) $30
1 year extended warranty $65
Of course you would compare that to some machines at like Best Buy and OD or even CC and you will say...that isn't cheaper...what gives??
Well it actually IS cheaper when you figure in a few things:
It works
It is upgradable without proprietary issues
It is actually what you are getting
I am not selling your information to another company to harass you
Did I mention it works?
The Super Suite is the equivilant of a $375 'option' at Best Buy and it is INCLUDED with mine.
Office XP 2003 is a $199 'option' with Best Buy and it is included with mine.
Most of all it is 'custom built' to what YOU want to do with it.
A lot of things are taken for granted when a system is being built. So much as a CPU or a specific MB is not always the best solution for your needs. I have some I would use for CAD people or GAMERS, others I would use for a business box or one for home use. YOu can get better performanace for different things out of each brand, style, or type of MB and CPU combonation.
There is more to it than calling Dell so they can 'build it for you'...my ass...
That being said...feel free to tell your friends..
Chris
P.S. I should also mention...when your current machine is not warking as you wish...you won't have to worry about me telling you it is a peice of junk and you need to upgrade to this shiny new one...I will look at it and give you ALL of your options...but if it IS a peice of crap...I will tell you...heh...
