How about we rephrase this as "the customer is not always bright", because I'm going to have to agree with seve having worked in the food industry.

Back when I worked at Wendy's, more than once I had people yell at me for not being able to find the Tacos on the menu. After I told them we didn't have tacos, they responded with, "you're a Taco Bell and you don't have TACOS?", to which I replied of course, "we're not Taco Bell, you're in a Wendy's".

A great case of the customer not being "bright". Sure, they may be "right" in the sense that the service industry must do what they want to please them (such as me directing them over to the nearest Taco Bell or suggesting a Spicy Chicken Combo) but that doesn't make them "bright".
"My friend says he wants to die. He's in a band, they sound like Pearl Jam, the clothes are all black and the music is crap."

The customer is not always right, but the customer is always the customer. I was an assistant manager with Pizza Hut for nearly 6 years when I was younger, and I can tell you that the customer, generally, is an idiot (or more appropriately a self-centered ignorant) who often times has NO idea what they're talking about. I still served them and catered to their wants, even if I poked fun of them the minute I was out of earshot.

People never know our jobs as well as we do (unless, of course, they've done them) and because of that will seldom meet our expectations, but it's not about them meeting our expectations. It's about us meeting theirs.

or the scene from Mallrats where T.S. is c*ck-blocking Shannon Hamilton at the elevator while Brodie gets busy with Renee.

T.S. Quint: Haven't you ever heard the phrase "The customer is always right?"
Shannon Hamilton: Let me tell you something. Let me give you a little secret, okay.
[yells it right in T.S.' ear]
Shannon Hamilton: The customer is always an butthead!
