Yea, Tim does it for attention....and just to give himself a good laugh.

I think music where all they do is scream and all that stuff is total sh*t. (Mostly cause I dunno wtf they're saying, and the guitar rhythmns really don't interest me at all in most of that music.)

But then again, most people on this board think the sh*t I listen to is 'emo' - blah blah cry music. I just like the metaphors they write....sue me. Brand New <3.

Not sure where I'm going with this. Oh yea, Tim just likes creating tension blah blah..... Maybe he should write an emo song about how people on the board pick on him.

Hopefully it's a trend that'll die out. Every metal/hardcore group now needs to scream and growl to get their airplay on MTV.

[quote="xtimothyx"] listen to the chorus riff of "more than a feeling" by boston. now, listen to the intro riff of "smells like teen spirit". it's the exact same thing. that's not very original or "punk rock" of kurt to do. even lovers of nirvana agree with me on this.quote]

Kurt has stated that he borrowed that riff from Boston. Not a huge revelation. He dug it as a kid and used it as an homage.

oh, but they do. seriously. girls definitely notice the difference. probably because they were pondering purchasing the jeans i'm wearing...

and how is stealing a riff from a band paying homage to them?

Well at least you have a reason this time. They have even made fun of themselves in an interview about the whole boston/spells like teen spirit rip off. The beatles were simplistic. As were a band such as Nirvana. A song should be about melody and sound rather than how many sixty forth notes someone can tap in succession. I could use this as an excuse for my crappy musicianship but I could also use this as an example of complication does not mean good. Look how many death/speed/thrash metal musicians can technically blow away so many other famous musicians skill wise. But a song does not please the ear by technicality alone. It's got to have some general vibe or emotion to it not just look at my fingers moving so fast you can barely see them. Jimmy Hendrix is a great example, he was an awesome musician, could play simply when he wanted to and also complicated as hell when he wanted to. He had emotion in his music. People that could play like him with that emotion I can respect but not another regurgitated I know my scales inside out musicians I don't really care for. It's got no feeling to it.

The context, silly. If he said he hated the riff, and used it, Boston might be offended. Odds are though, they were flattered Kurt (or anyone) liked it enough to put it in a song of theirs.

Flattery comes in all forms.

i agree that there are times when simplicity is best, and can portray emotions a lot better than technicality, for example: copeland.

but i don't think an entire band's livelihood should be based on simplicity, because it gets boring after a while. i mean, sure, they may be feeling whatever emotions they're singing about, but come on...the whole verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus thing gets boring after a while. that's why bands like betweem the buried and me and converge deserve a helluva lot of respect, because they're truly talented musicians.
