Grateful Dead

Post by bassjones »

I'm a recent convert actually. I hated the Dead for a long time because of that whole stupid hippie culture, then I picked up a Jazz is Dead disc, then a "best of", then I actually listened to some live recordings. Still wouldn't be the first CD I'd grab to listen to, but they wrote some very cool things. Phil's bass playing is golden, but I wish they'd never let him sing...

RE: Phil Lesh...I couldn't agree more. It sounds like he's singing with a goldfish lodged in his throat.

I prefer Bob Weir and Jerry's vocals over Lesh ANY DAY. sh*t, I'd rather listen to my dog bark at the mailman.

But yeah...once you get past the stereotypical hippie thing, the Grateful Dead is great. With the exception of the drum solos (and the space jams). I forking HATE drum solos and space jams.

And for sh*ts and giggles...I'll list a few Dead favorites of mine.

1.) Bird Song
2.) Me & My Uncle
3.) Jack Straw
4.) Peggy-O
5.) Saint of Circumstance
6.) Althea
7.) Dire Wolf
8.) Franklin's Tower
9.) Viola Lee Blues
10.) Bertha

Man, I could go on forever.

Here's a great GD reference website...

And damn...5 votes and no haters? That's unusual. And I'm guessing it won't be that way for long.

Fleek, we do a killer version of Franklin's Tower (hint, hint) and Not Fade Away. You should come out Friday...

I would've never guessed you guys would cover a Buddy Holly song.

As for checking you guys out...it'll have to wait. We'll be up in the Dirty North (Garrett) for a Halloween party on Friday.

It's closer to the Dead's version of it. We do it along with Iko Iko. Usually a set closer.

Here are a few personal favorites

Wharf Rat
King Solomons Marbles
Tennessee
Cumberland Blues
Brokedown Palace
Ship Of Fools
Help On The Way/Slipknot!

Everything on Reckoning.

While the "culture" may not be for everyone, I had the time of my life living like a stupid hippie for a few years in my youth. Music, sex, drugs...ah those were the days!
