cursed songs!

There are (or were) 6 words you can't say on television, but in music you can record whatever words you feel like singing as long as it carries Tipper Gore's "explicit lyrics" label.

So, I have been thinking. For me personally, I could do without cursing in music. For the most part it doesn't thrill me like most people. It doesn't offend me...it just usually don't care to hear it put to song. Lately, though, I have noticed a few exceptions to my rule.

I've noticed that there are some songs that (when a placed in the perfect moment or sang in a certain way) profanity can make better, funnier, more impassioned, explosive, etc, etc, etc....

example: Nada Surf - "Blankest Years" This is a poppy/upbeat song. Something that you could hear on The OC sountrack......but then wait....the chorus is "AWE f**k IT, I'm gonna have a party." This adds a demention of hilarity that draws me into what would be just an OK song without profanity. (it is also extremely funny to me to hear background vocals sweetly singing "f**k it" in response to each chorus)

other examples are: Ani DiFranco - "Untouchable Face" A light ballad-type acoustic song about love lost that takes a slightly ugly turn. "She's not really me type, but I think you two are forever. I hate to say it, but you're perfect together. So....f**k you and your untouchable face. f**k you for existing in the first place."

Eels - "It's a Motherf*cker" ...a love song (kinda).

Have you heard any songs like that? This is something that intrigues me...I don't really know why. :)

I like well placed cursing, most of the time I could care less. I'm a big fan of the usage of "bullsh*t" in a song, thats always fun.

There is a tune by Smokie called Who the F*#K is Alice. A dude is singing a nice light lyical tune about a girl named Alice.

Sally called when she got the word,
She said: "I suppose you've heard -
About Alice".
Well I rushed to the window,
And I looked outside,
But I could hardly believe my eyes -
As a big limousine rolled up
Into Alice's drive...

Oh, I don't know why she's leaving,
Or where she's gonna go,
I guess she's got her reasons,
But I just don't want to know,
'Cos for twenty-four years
I've been living next door to Alice.
Alice! Who the f**k is Alice?

A bunch of people yell out the Alice? WTFIA? part. Pretty Funny.

I try not to be prudish about it - I mean I listen to Ben Folds despite his liberal use of profanity; although he is talented enough not to need to stoop to that. It is probably what got him noticed at first, which is a sad commentary on our media.

BUT, I would say 80 - 90% of the time, using profanity in lyrics is a sign that the person has RUN OUT OF IDEAS.

I pound out beats on my djembe for some freestylers to rap to; but on the condition that I stop playing when they start cussing, because it shows a lack of creativity. Sadly, most of the spitters can't spit more than 5 lines without cussing (or threatening someone with violence), which leaves me with TREMENDOUS respect for the truly talented ones that could.

Words are tools. Their effect is based on usage. Using the right word at the right moment can go far.

That's my latest song. I worked really hard on the lyrics; can't you tell? Can you sense the pain in my heart from such meaningful expression? Oh, and I wrote another song:

ASS:

Ass Ass Ass Ass Ass Ass Ass Ass
Ass Ass Ass Ass Ass Ass Ass Ass

Chorus:
Ass Ass Ass
Ass Ass
Ass Ass Ass
Ass Ass

Bridge:
Ass . . .Ass

Boy, am I on a creative streak! It just comes and goes like that. . .

Someday I'll win an Emmy with brilliant lyrics like that!
