Start a funk/soul list, cuz he definitely would be in there. Unbelievable half-time show. I don't even really dig that kind of music all that much, but tt blew me away. Made me want to skip the game and have more music.

Back on track: singer songwriters of the folk/rock/experimental vein.

I need to be more concise from the get-go.

Joni Mitchell. Any top five songwriters list must include Joni Mitchell.

"I was a free man in Paris
I felt unfettered and alive.
There was nobody calling me up for favors
And no one's future to decide.
You know I'd go back there tomorrow
But for the work I've taken on...
Stoking the star-maker machinery
Behind the popular song."

Chicks can't write music. Kidding.

OK. Top 5 MALE songwriters of the vein mentioned above. Jeezus. This is what I get for being a littel vague.

Loved her work with Jaco. Brilliant! Seems like singers today just want to blow their vocal chops over a very generic (boring as hell) musical backdrop. Joni managed to shine vocally and let the band (especially Jaco) shine at the same time. In fact, Jaco's brilliance probably brought out the best in Joni.

Nice effin' work my man. I don't know whether to be impressed or concered! I'll go with the former.

Assuming you dig their style, they are all you need. Well, other than James Blunt.

So, are you a McCartney fan, a Lennon fan or a Harrison fan? i.e. which Beatle are you most influenced by? I think I know, but...

I realize that I'm probably in the extreme minority here; but, I never "got" Dylan.......Great Lyrcist, but........But, I just don't like any of his songs/ music. If it were based strictly on lyrics & longevity, I get it. But, to me, Bob Dylan is a wonderful poet who just so happens to play a little bit of guitar.

Likewise. Also, Leonard Cohen who I dearly love for his pursuit of Zen and his extremely quoteable lyrics. But that's not songwriting... not on a level with Elvis Costello or Joni Mitchell (why does this list have to be MALE songwriter? Dylan never wrote two lines as good as any two lines in any Joni Mitchell song.)

bassjones - Whoof! Don Juan's' Reckless Daughter came out when I was working at Karma records, and it blew my mind.
