I have never been a smoker; but, Lemert said that when he quit, his range improved significantly. Maybe your problems aren't necessarily related to smoking; but, rather, the seasonal change? I would guess you have been heating your home a bit more in the last 7 weeks, & dry heat really adversly affects your voice...I bought a humidifier & it helps keep my throat from getting dry. You may also want to drink some hot decaffinated tea prior to singing (it really loosens things up). I never, ever use throat coat before a gig or any throat spray. I've found throat coat "phlems me out" & is great after a gig, but not before. & throat sprays are kinda like a cordizone shot - you may be singing better, but you may also be unknowingly damaging your "numb" throat. I also cannot perform without gum in my mouth. Gum keeps my throat from getting dry. Also, getting enough sleep the night before a gig is huge & alcohol will f**k your world up, as a singer. I know these suggestions are pretty lame & maybe even dorky; but, I thought I'd at least share with you, what works for me.
Also, do you do any "vocal exercises"? You should warm things up a tad before singing. It's no different than lifting weights.....You don't just walk into the room & go for your "maximum" lift, without warming up first.
Hopefully that helps a bit.
