people were doing TONS of battles LONG before CSW joined with Whatzup. Piere's used to do one every year. HUGE event. Usually had 10-12 bands. Now they don't do it, or I'm not aware of it. I think that it was a Pyro-Sound thing, but I don't know.

Anyhow. . .what is wrong with a little competition?

When guns get involved, that's one bad thing.

It's not a battle of the bands as much it is a battle of the fans. The fans that the band brings out is usually what determines who wins. The best band doesn't always win. But then again, it's all about opinion. Mine differs from most.

Well, based on the whatzup format, yes.

Many BoB that I have seen had a panel of judges who decided, crowd participation was not involved.

Eitherway. . .I think it's a great idea to pit subjective, creative, personal expressions against each other to eek out who's the best! I mean, we should compete in all things this way. I'll be the first so sign up for the Battle of the Bellies. I've got a mighty one!

Personally, I think BoB's are fine, as long as they aren't like every week/month. If you are doing them every week, they are not as exciting and therefore may not draw...I would think that as long as there are only a couple a year, they'd be fine.

Also, I think the panel of judges is the best format. Crowd participation can be factored in, but that shouldn't be the sole category for finding a winner. If you could get a semi-unbiased panel, or at least enough diversity on the panel that it wouldn't seem to be an unfair judgement, I'd think that could go a long way...

In the marketplace and on the sports field, competition is a good thing. In music, I don't think it's such a good thing.

Competition is healthy in everything. It's the nature of the world. Competition, handled the right way, precipitates change and improvement. If people were not competing with themselves or each other, things would grow stagnant and there would be no new ideas.

Competition is good. Change is inevitable.

I guess it depends on how the "battles" are done. When it's a popularity contest, the really good musician's don't win because they don't have a huge crowd. But, I still think anything that showcases the amazing talent we have in this area is good, the battle of the bands format just seems to have been used a lot. I like this idea that Anderson has come up with with local bands covering other local bands tunes . . . that could turn out to be quite good! Who knows what other ideas lurk within his brain . . . . . . . . . . .
Promote and Support your local musicians! Buy their CDs and frequent the venues where they play!

So lets say you participate in a 'Battle' and your ass is soundly kicked by a better, perhaps different band, but yet your rabid fans and family stuff the ballot box to insure your win.

Hollow victories dilute the purpose and stir animosity.

No one wins...there is no 'better'...only different.

I prefer a showcase.

Battling for music is like dancing for peace.

or something like that.

I wouldn't count on a panel of judges to give an accurate decision, either.

BAck when there was a preponderance of beer tents at 3RF, that one dive bar in Waynedale, I forget the name, it was back by the roller rink, had a Bof B's. FW's best bands (and us) came and competed. It turned out their house band, I think they were called The Lost (which was an appropriate name for these guys) won everything – no bias there!

I say go participate in the Bf B's, just don't hang too much weight on the results. Hust enjoy yourself and the other bands.

Anchor battles are still holding it down.

Zephaniah won. . . . yay!

And it was an 'hxc' battle as for most. Kinda different, but good for Zephaniah. I think the prize for that battle was free recording at Monastic Chambers. Like 8 hours or something. That is what it was last year.
