Any Americana/Roots Music Fans?

Post by Heliotropix »

Guitarist/vocalist/multi-instrumentalist wanting to start a band or duo performing alternative country/folk music. Influences include early artists such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Whiskeytown, Wilco, Richard Thompson, Emmylou Harris and even very early blues and folk to present artists like Jesse Sykes and Neko Case. I use vintage gear and have been playing for 15 years in various bands from progressive rock to surf, combining copy material with original music. The end result of this project would be to perform in the area twice a month with 1-2 rehearsals per week, working towards two sets of mostly original material including reinterpretations of copy material. I'm looking for musicians that understand the roots of American music but like to experiment with the genre. Any age, gender or skill level considered.

I might be interested in something like this. I'm Jim Bordner, acoustic and electric guitar/bass/keys, singer. 35 years, currently a full-time professional as I have been for the past 11 years.

Were you a Blaggerd (and old post of yours indicates that you were)? I sat in with Yo Yo Pa one night, and we jammed together on "Tear My Stillhouse Down" by Gillian Welch. Were you there? :)

A Blaggerd, yep, but not a Yo Yo Pa member. The Blaggerds had a kinda internal division between those that wanted a more traditional Pogues-like sound and others that preferred the novelty side. The Yo Yo Pa members were of the latter, so I didn't fit in, but we're all still buddies.

I'll send you a PM and we'll talk more.

Surprised I missed this. Lemme know if yer still lookin' 'bout fer people.

I'm a folkie. I play guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin an' I can fake keys/accordion if I need to. Most of what I've been doin' lately doesn't exactly make it sound like it, but I'm pretty decent at vocals, as well. As a lead, not so much, but if yer lookin' fer bluegrass-esque harmonies, I can manage.

Side note: Currently, all I own is a banjo, and mandolin. Access to guitar. Otherwise, apologies.

My main influences musically (I'll limit it to genres for brevity's sake), are old (non-pop) country, bluegrass, irish/scottish folk, 20's - 40's jazz/swing, an' punk (yes, I know tha'd seem t' be counter-productive.

I'm in a couple o' bands at the moment, but as having recently found m'self unemployed, until further notice most of my time is unaccounted for, outside of alcohol.

You can hear some of what I've done/written at my personal myspace: http://www.myspace.com/tomfckingmcsod
An' some of my current band, the Staggerers, early recordings at:

Lemme know, eh?

Checked out your site and the Staggerers site. I liked "Goblin March" and "Star of the County Down". Next time the Blaggerds play St. Paddy's Day at Mad Anthony's we'll see if you can open for us - if you like.

Haven't gotten much response here, as you might have guessed, so I'll let my ad ride for a bit longer. I'll let you know if anything gets rolling.
