So I was out traveling all week for work and I noticed while I was gone we had about 7 or 8 homicides in this city.

What the hell is going on around here?

"don't screw your dealer. don't screw your dealer's wife." former chief of police, Neil T. Moore on how to avoid being a shooting victim. There are very, very rarely "random" shootings, but if I had my guess, I'd bet there's drugs, gangs, and/or O-P-P issues involved in most, if not all, of these deaths. Not that it's any less tragic. I'm just sayin'

there's no guessing.
it was all gang related activity.
and record-setting, at that.

The GF said something about this happening last week - maybe I should turn the tele on or read the paper. She relayed to me that it was all gang and/or drug related. I was surprised to hear that something happened on the North side of town. Though those things can leak anywhere, I'm sure. It's not that big of a city.

how, precisely, is it profiling? i'd really like an explanation of that. someone making a guess regarding several suspicious deaths around which not much concrete information has been given? to make a profile, one needs evidence and information. . .which (to my admittedly limited knowledge) has not been provided.

on top of that, it appears that there have been leaks that it's gang related.

you do realize that law enforcement uses the concept of profiling to catch criminals and prevent crime to good effect right? the X-files would have never existed without profiling.

maybe it's just me, but i don't see how compiling a set of facts about a crime or criminal and making an educated guess regarding the nature of both is a bad thing. to me, it's good critical thinking and problem solving.

I saw a white dog with black spots sitting at a fire station once. I assumed it was a dalmation - I was probably profiling said dog. I'd like to offer an official apology to the dog and any of the dog's family that may have been hurt or offended by my assumptions about breed.

Not to mention I've worked with teenage offenders on either a professional or volunteer basis for the last 15 years or so. I get extremely pissed off about "arrested for driving while black" type profiling, but some profiling serves a purpose.

Quick - 10 year old white girl raped and murdered, body covered with a sheet, a teddy bear left in her arms... Who we looking for? White male, 25-40, most likely related or possibly a close family friend. There's a profile.

Now, 21 year old black male, gang tattoos, known criminal history, shot in the head at a "party". What are we looking at? Gang hit. there's a profile

Pregnant female, shot in the stomach, viable fetus also dies. Who we looking for? A. The baby's father or B. an enemy of the baby's father. another profile

bank was just robbed by 3 black males this afternoon, officer Joe pulls over 14 cars with black males driving them that afternoon, "just in case" - that's not okay. building a case and searching for suspects based on known trends and past experience... that's profiling.

I'm white, 6'3", sporting New Balance at the basketball court at any Fort Wayne public park. No one picks me up on their team...probably can't ball...certainly can't dunk.

Now that is profiling...
