There was this cool chapter about Gatekeepers that I referenced in my above post, if we're talking about the same book. Howard Zinn, the History guy, right? He said that most EFFECTIVE social change comes from the gatekeepers. Others have risen up with limited success. This was that Zinn guy that I saw at Manchester, right? - 'cause I think I use to use his book extensively in my teaching at my old skool, if we're talking about the same Howard Zinn.

Huh? Are you sure it's the same 'People's History of the US' that I read? Because I sure didn't see that in there. Howard Zinn's book, right?

Why is grammar important? Communication involves a sender and a receiver. In order for communication to be effective the receiver must be able to understand the message the sender of that message sent. In spoken communication that is relatively easy, provided both the sender and receiver use a common language - or at least have a basic understanding of a common language.
In written communication the sender (writer) uses grammar to more effectively communicate his/her (grammatical rules change sometimes - hence "his/her") message to the receiver (reader) of that message. The message is communicated much more effectively following simple rules for proper grammar. When one fails to learn and follow those simple rules one is less likely to be able to effectively communicate one's message to the desired receivers (target audience).

I believe you mean EFFECTIVE...It would seem that way. But luckily for everyone, that's not true. Our thought are only as AFFECTIVE as our ability to communicate them to others. Not everything is about persuasion.

No apostrophe necessary there... However in the same post...I'd like to focus on this part of the argument as it is, to me, the most intriguing. That language is a standard and accepted means of communication is no reason to dismiss it out of hand. In fact, it's standardization allows for us to communicate and even have this discussion.
It's not standard so it's better right Arkface?

I'm pretty sure that JoJo, I mean Arkface, meant affective.

Right about now is when the teacher would start bitching because I'm talking to the person next to me.
It's simple. Grammar and proper punctuation is rarely used because learning it is absolutely boring. "Hey, let's study words and the proper usage of those words."
How about "no", Scott? Mmkay?

Farther v. Further
Here's one that I see all the time. I, in speaking, often make this mistake and immediately correct it, but in writing my mind is slowed down and more contemplative, so I don't make it as often.
Farther is used for anything regarding physical distance.
"I can't get the broomstick any farther up my bum."
Further is used for abstract denoting advancement to a greater degree of something.
"I can take no further abuse from the splinters of the broomhandle."

I haven't talked to Arkface aka Jo Jo in probably two years, but when I saw a debate happening and a member deleted, I called it immediately. It had Jo Jo stank all over it. : )
I work at a library. A building FILLED with words, brimming with the human language, right? Ok. When the fridge broke down in the break room, a sign was TYPED and PRINTED OUT, then taped on ALL FOUR SIDES to said fridge, that read, "This fridge is brokin."
I wanted to steal it and keep it forever. Or write underneath it, "So is my spirit."
On a side note....I used to be a grammar Nazi, but I don't mind too much anymore. I've met some incredibly intelligent people who consistently misuse words ("good" and "well" is a pet peeve of mine), or just can't spell. I still like these people and consider them intelligent. Maybe they just didn't read enough as a child. Whatever. What really gets me is when I'm reading a book and I find spelling or grammatical errors. How many people had to proof it? How many editors and wives and publishers read over that final draft (not to mention the writer themselves), and yet it STILL gets published with mistakes. I don't get it.

I'm a critic of this shameful contract, and of wasteful consumption, on general principles. Since it's nonsensical, plus embarrassing, to be an outspoken critic of things you do yourself, I set myself long ago to denting the salacious appetites of my homeland and making us a more perfect union by living inside this imperfect beast, poking at its belly from the inside with my one little life and the small, pointed sword of my pen. Some may say this is rationalization, but....I really like medium Snickers Blizzards from Dairy Queen. And you can't get those in India. At least not good ones.
I once heard a tale, not confirmed, that a group of Enlgish professors set out to write a book that had absolutely no errors in it. They succeeded, but there was a misspelling in the title. How poetic and ironic is that? Delightful. I wish I had been able to confirm that story, but it's good for the telling anyhow.
