One of the most awesome bands on the planet is coming to Fort Wayne on May 26th -- The Avett Brothers.
I'm at a loss on how to describe these guys, but I saw them in Nashville last September, with no idea who they were, and it was like they took a three-wood to my jaw. I picked up my teeth (the ones I could find) and was absolutely blown away. They're a bit like The Clash playing old Johnny Cash songs off the back of a pickup truck that's running 90MPH down a dirt road with no driver.
The Avetts have feature articles in the new PASTE and NO DEPRESSION, just headlined MerleFest, and are playing Ft Wayne on their way to Bonnaroo.
You can hear the Avetts at their MySpace site, and I think Doubleshot can chime in with some more links:

Anyway, this is the first show of Downtown Improvement's UBDT (UpBeat DownTown) summer music series. The first four shows are the "Wayne Calhoun Troubadour Series" and three of them are focusing on more roots oriented acts. I'm not sure about the YLNI thing. Wayne Calhoun is a legendary Fort Wayne-based troubadour that those two streets are named after, so DID is resurrecting his name to sponsor these shows.
The series will continue throughout the summer in different locations with 4 or 5 week stints in each. For this series, they'll be blocking off Wayne and/or Calhoun for the night.

Legendary Trainhoppers open.

Here's the poster.

Your work is good too, Ando! But I know what you mean --- that is one AWESOME poster - I immediately reposted that up on my myspace and websites - and the general quality of both sites improved instantaneously.

Sweet, something I can walk downtown to see/do. I knew there was going to be a better reason for living in West Central than it simply being an awesome neighborhood.

Thanks for the kind words on the poster, yall. That's 25 hours of blood, sweat, tears, vanilla vodka and black cherry vanilla diet coke.

If anyone wants to street team it, DID will have about 500 of the posters by the weekend.

As for more songs, I'll compile some MP3s and post them on yousendit.com or something shortly.......I'm serious though, Whatzup might as well hand the Avett Bros the trophy for "BEST NATIONAL CONCERT 2006" before they even take the stage......

Me want posters. These guys are so damn fantastic.

The Avett mix M. Kelley sent me has been in my player ever since last week. Thanks man. And nice little OLG CD jacket.

Check them out live also at http://www.cmt.comin the New Voices No Cover section. Just register for free and check them out for a little preview of what they will be like live. Incredible.

Don't be sad Ando. You still make hot devil-girl posters.

The outdoor concert quality will be much improved this summer, trust me.

Some key groups have been working for months to organize outdoor events that showcase something outside of cover bands and the same old classic rock tunes. You may not like everything, but I can guarantee it won't be like last summer's festivals (well, aside from the coolness that was S.C.H.E.M.E.)

The Wayne/Calhoun corridor will include restuarants such as Higher Grounds & Dash-in, Toscani Pizza, etc. staying open late, music inside venues and outside on the streets, possibly at One Summit Square, etc.

To continue the series, a variety of 'world' music - reggae, zydeco, celtic, will be featured at the Botanical Conservatory's outdoor garden on Fridays as well.

The goal is to make you feel like something cool is happening right here, in downtown Fort Wayne.

There's been a lot of talk & now it's happening. It's killer to be involved.

I'll believe that when I see it.

If, in fact, that IS the case, someone needs to introduce this committee to the committee that books the sh*tty shows @ Piere's and the Coliseum. This city flat-out blows goats when it comes to concerts.

Yep. I agree. I didn't mention anything about Pierre's or the Coliseum and I can count the times I've been to both on one hand.
