Maybe because it is because I am a drummer; but–


I have very rarely seen a band where any individual player ruins what could be an alright band, except for when it's the drummer. If the foundation is shaky, the whole building suffers; and drums seem to be that foundation for a good band. If their time, volume, or feel is off, the whole band suffers.

Other players can seem to get away with being minimalist, or even a little off, but it seems like if you're watching a band and something is wrong and you can't put your finger on it, it is the drummer. While the bass is vital, I've never said 'Man, the bass player ruins that band.'

I could be wrong because of my bias – opinions?

Nope you are right on, sh*tty drummer = sh*tty band. I will leave the bar if the drummer sucks, it is painful for me to listen too.

But totally true (the original point). Take it from a drunk drummer, I have heard myself ruin a show or two.

Think it is hard to hear a band with a sh*tty drummer, try hearing your self suck while on stage playing. What a situation that is.

I disagree. Any member of a band that plays out of tune or out of time ruins the sound.

"Other players seem to get away with being minimalist..." What do you mean by this? Are you saying a drummer has to be "busy" or playing a whole lot of strokes or something to be "good?"

Trying to sum up the mechanics of music in a homily never works. What about bands that cook but nobody in the whole group can sing? How about a band where the drummer is fighting a lackluster bass player? Or one with a mediocre guitar player who is too loud and too late all the time? I don't want to listen to ANY of these.

There are a lot if different things that go into making music but for me nothing more musically wrenching than trying to keep a drummer in time...but then typically a drummer like that isn't listening to me anyway...or any listening to anything for that matter.
Lack of listening- I guess that a common theme to any train wreck type of musician/performance.

Bad choice of words on my part - I mean a guitarist (or keyboardist) can sometimes just play the chords all night and if the songs and the rest of the band are good, it's okay, depending on the genre.

I am the wrong drummer to ask, since I am a busy player; but I like to think I play what fits. Sometimes, less is less.

Of course the original statement was a generalization; but indeed, if you are watching a band and something is wrong and you can't quite put your finger on it, chances are it is the drummer, more often that not.

I have seen a bass player f**k up a band, but that is only when they dont pay attention to the drummer at all.

Had that in the begining of Pleasing Melani, we had an excellent bass player but he was constantly soloing and barely trying to lock with me. i think that was just age, he seems to have found his niche in Action Jaxson

Ummm, shouldn't YOU be listening to the drummer? Last I checked the drummer sets the tempo...maybe this is part of the problem eh?

Tempo yes, but there are subtle things a bassist can do to push or pull the groove - if he knows what the fk he's doing. And you should be listening to each other...
