OS - XP pro, sp2
Intel CPU t2060 1.6
gig of ram

This thing randomly freezes EVERYTHING and then comes right back after about 5-10 seconds. What can I do to fix this? It happens one frequency once or twice every 5 hours while Im running an audio system the runs about 40-50% CPU.
It also happens occasionally just surfing....any ideas?? I cant seem to fix the thing and while its happening on the job its cutting all audio! not very fun...

Various ideas....

#1. Java hangup. Update to the latest version of Java.
#2. Background Program. Get someone who can go through your msconfig and take out what doesn't need to be running.
#3. Wipe/reinstall. You could spend months fixing a computer, or you could spend a couple of hours double backing up what you have and do a wipe/install to have a fresh new machine.

I'd also recommend AdAware to see what it finds on the system. May have some malware running loose.

#4 is switch to a Mac, but no one really wants to hear that....

increase RAM. 1 GIG barely runs most modern recording programs. Get 12 tracks or more with plug-ins on each track and you run out of room pretty quickly.

Could be an overheating problem as well...

Probably just the memory not refreshing fast enough with the audio software...system resources are the first option.

Grab a FREE memory optimizer like RAMBooster or something...it refreshes the system memory automatically when it falls below a certain point...works in the background and does it invisible to everything else...

I had some malware that was attaching itself to several programs (i.e. Photoshop, Flash, ....exc) everytime I would open one of them it would open a duplicate process. The dup would quickly over time rack up system resources until each was randomly using %50 rednering my computer use less. This, until I figured out what was going on, made it seem that my computer was just randomly freezing every time I started it up.

Thanks for the help gentlemen!
Im going through it today...will report back in a few to let you know what it is!
More gig - Yea, I should have done that a long time ago, but I've run this app (serato) on 512 with the graphics set lower and the audio is fine.
Overheating - I bought a cooling pad just for that reason and the thing still did it.

Im gonna have my bro go through Config, update my java and grab a ram optimizer. I use AVG and scan once or twice a week so I dont think its anything too awful going?

Ah, didn't realize it was a laptop...

I just replaced my cpu fan 3 days ago due to overheating problems that shut down my system. At boot, I did get an error message a few weeks ago saying there was an error with my cpu fan, but I ignored it...I guess these new bios are getting pretty smart:)
