My Christmas Present

Post by Garr »

This is what I got from my son (a.k.a. wife buying me a gift saying it's from my son).

Image

I LOVE it. I haven't had a whole lot of time to play around with it, but it's a hundred times better than a mouse. It's a bit clunky, but that's just getting acclimated.

If you're looking for a low-cost tablet, this is the one. Do it, do it!

I had been looking at wacom tablets for a year or two...but the ones I wanted have always been too expensive for my tastes, even used. I hadn't looked at the bamboo models, which seem to be the entry-level. Does anyone have any feedback on these, as compared to the higher-end models from wacom?

At a $100 price point, this may be a possibility for me, depending on performance...I am kinda worried about Garr's "clunky" statement...and I'd be looking for not only a mouse replacement for photo editing/selecting, but also hand drawing...

Let me clarify my statement. When I say clunky, I'm not referring to the performance of the device. It's right on. The clunkiness is getting used to the way it works and getting your mind out of mouse mode. The pad represents your entire visible screen and it takes a bit to get rid of the lift-move-drop-drag motion of the mouse.

When it comes to hand drawing, this thing is the king. I'm sure that the more expensive versions are better.

The device can sense the stylus hovering above it at about a half an inch and moves the cursor accordingly. There are two buttons on the stylus for mouse functions, but I remember having to change the default settings to get them to work the way I wanted them. There are some buttons on the tablet, but I have not needed them yet. Their function can also be customized.

Tapping the board equals a click and a double tap is a double click. It takes a bit to get the technique for that down, but it can work well.

If you set your keyboard to the side and you know your tool shortcuts, using this device to draw, edit, touch-up, etc. is VERY easy. Far more intuitive and sensitive than a mouse and a lot easier to control. Now, if you can't draw to begin with, this tool won't do much for you, but if you know how to use your tools and you have a smidgeon of talent, this is a great beginner's tool and I'd recommend it without hesitation.

I'm very happy with mine. I would say, though, that there is an easy ten to twenty hour acclimation phase while you get used to the controls and sensitivity of the device. I've used mine for about seven hours total thus far and I feel confident that a few more projects will bring me into line.

Thanks for the clarification...its good to know the clunky was not based on the stylus performance...

Maybe this is something that can fit the bill in the price range I was looking for. The bamboo tablet has to be pretty new, as I had not uncovered any reviews when I was searching before...found a ton of other wacom tablets, just not the bamboo.

What's the standard, as far as the industry goes? I've always wondered that...

Nothing at all that I'd be willing to show.

I'm not much of an artist, to be honest. I just really enjoy creating digital art. I have no rudiments or fundamentals. I've considered taking some drawing courses for non-majors at IPFW. I've heard, though, that Saint Francis has a far better art department.

I'll work on a couple things over the next week and post them. Don't expect anything worth looking at, though.

I bought one for work projects and I love it. It is used mostly by a StFrancis grad who is interning as a video editor. She does great work with it. I recommend getting one.

Nice work! Which one of the creepy old guys did you identify best with when you drew that?

I love Wacom tablets. Once you get used to using one, you cannot go back to a mouse, especially for image editing. I've been using an Intuos for about 8 or 9 years now - there's no substitute. :)

Yeah, there are several layers of sensitivity. Have to make sure you're using a soft brush and/or airbrush setting so that it comes through, but it's really nice to make short swift strokes and see them show lightly. You can also push a bit harder and get a darker, broader stroke. Nice tool, it is.
