Jul 31, 2006 - (Fort Wayne, IN)--Two Fort Wayne businesses have been damaged by an overnight fire.
Officials say a blaze started around 1:00 this morning in The Side Pocket Pub at the Georgetown North Shopping Center on Maplecrest Road.
Heavy smoke from the fire spread to the neighboring Umber's Ace Hardware Store.
The blaze was extinguished in about a half an hour.
Side Pocket was heavily damaged, while the hardware store had smoke damage.
The fire's cause is under investigation. (Edited by Paula Hinton)

I'm not entirely unfamilar with the concept of "gallows" humor, but I find this comment to be in extreme poor taste on multiple levels...

tragedy + time = humor.
It has been this way for centuries.
Apologies if offended.
Maybe in 25 more years it will be less of a stigma.

I'm sorry he was offended also, but someone with 18 posts in a year isn't exactly a contributing member of the online fwm community. Without sounding crass, the feel and flow of this forum is dictated by its active users and probably isn't going to change without more activity from people who think differently.

Besides no one was hurt and they will be getting a nice insurance check i am sure.
And they do plan to rebuild. A bummer? Yes. Tragic? Nah.
I am freinds with them all there and I think they are all doing fine.

I still feel the comment by a.a. was in poor taste on multiple levels. In addition to the losses felt by owners, employees, and patrons of the Side Pocket, this comment was incredibly insensitive to everyone who lost a family member, loved one, or friend in the New Hampshire/Great White club fire. If you think the Fort Wayne area has no local connection to this disaster, you would be wrong. Andy Pauquet of Fort Wayne's own Taj Maholics was a close friend of Ty Longley, the Great White guitarist who perished in the fire. I would be quite surprised if Andy found any humor in this.

This reminds me of the South Park episode that went.....it's been 20 years so now it's okay to make fun of AIDS!......disturbing.....funny.....but disturbing.
In case you are wondering, yes I have a sick sense of humor, you can't go through seeing people half blown up without gaining one.

I guess I'm mildly curious why you presume that I want to affect change to anyone's behavior on this internet forum. I was simply commenting about something I read here that I did not agree with. I'd like to offer an additional opinion; Everyone who post's here at FWM is a contributing member, regardless of their individual post count.

So is it ALL "gallows humor" that you dislike, or is it this one that offends?

I like virtually all types of humor, and I love to laugh. (Just ask the guys in my band) I also tend to agree with your previous comment that "tragedy + time = humor". However, virtually all the victims of the fire in New Hampshire were music lovers, and more than a few in the crowd were musicians also. Brothers and sisters one and all. It just hits too close too home for me, and not anywhere near enough time has elapsed for me to find humor in this particular situation.
Garr, in case you're keeping track, I'm up to 21 posts! Please, oh please, oh pretty please, can I be taken seriously as a forum member yet?

:::EDIT::: I posted this seconds after yours
What you have to realize is that this wasn't a "HAHAHAHA" type joke.
The humor, not unlike any black comedy is not in the actual EVENT but what it alluded too.
AA was pointing out the irony of a local bar that caught fire. NOT "hey look at the victim's on the ground"
If a boat hits an iceberg, how many Titanic Jokes do think you would hear?
The humor is in the coincidence of the the event and the perception of it's irony.
I don't believe for one second that you have NEVER told a joke at another expense, or at a strangers misfortune.
Pot....meet Kettle.
