Anyone been to the Childrens Zoo yet this year?

What is it about the zoo that makes it a "childrens zoo" I've always been unclear on this.

The goats are specially trained to only hump children's legs...

How many zoo's have you been to? Its pretty obvious that our zoo is tailored to children. The learning centers, rides and interaction all plays into that.

Not many but most have some sort of learning center to them, you can feed animals, I'm not to sure about the rides though.

I always thought it was because the animals were young and not full grown. Now that I'm older it doesn't make much sense so my dad must have been lying to me.

ive never been to a zoo without learning centers and a train.

the only thing that sets us apart is the donkey ride.

other than that, nothing seems to set it apart from others.

i dunno, i may be wrong.

When the FWCZ first opened, Zoos in the country were not designed for children with educational and interactive elements like they are now.

Animals were caged in substandard conditions and it was more of a side show parade than a viable animal habitat.

The FWCZ was one of the first *real* zoos to change this standard. They went into it with the sole purpose of catering to children and families and creating living , natual environments where education is the main goal.

They labeled it a 'Children's' zoo to emphasize this change and to market it accordingly.

Since then most successful zoos across the country have followed this same path and business plan

FWCZ wasn't the first to do this, but certainly was VERY succesfull at it and has been recognized for it.

I've been to Detroit's zoo, Toledo, Cinci and a small zoo in Grand Rapids and Fort Wayne's is on par with all of them - better than GR's. It's not as big as the others, but with children that's a good thing.

I used to love going to the Cincinnati Zoo. That place rocked as a kid.

i havent been to many zoo's around here.

but if you get a chance to hit up the area, go to the st.louis zoo.

not a childrens zoo or whatnot, but an amazing place.

and its huge, you need at least 3-4 hours to see everything.

Chicago's zoo was neat. It's free also. The thing I remember liking was seeing giraffes against the skyscrapers. Just a weird sight.

Also, I found it funny that they had a whole section that was a farm, with cows pigs and the like. (Not like the petting area at FW zoo, much bigger.) I then realized that most kids growing up in Chicago probably have never seen a real barn with cows like I take for granted around here.
