I googled ipfw crime statistics and it went back to 2001. "Technically", the Chancellor is wrong because there was a robbery in 2001. The FBI considers robbery a violent crime against a person rather than a property crime because it is by definition taking by force or threat of force the property of another, as opposed to burglary which is a no contact theft.

I couldn't go back further than that, and the incidents in question were early 90's.

Regardless, IPFW is an extremely safe campus and no one should be overwhelmingly concerned for their safety, though it's always a good idea to remain alert to potential danger.

You can get a lot of info here:
http://ipfw.edu/police/

My dad used to be the Chief of Police at IPFW, and the new one is a close personal friend of mine, but more of my father's. They (IPFW Police) are on the up and up. I've worked with many of the officers and this type of thing, considering the population of the campus, just doesn't happen that frequently. MOST of the reported occurrences happen in the student housing (i.e. dorms) and the campus itself is actually very safe. Also realize, the IPFW police are somewhere between local and state police when it comes to jurisdiction/authority. They are actually a step above the FWPD and most of them are retired FWPD officers too.

Professor Lam's murder was OVER fifteen years ago (1992), so I wouldn't lump that in with the recent strain of events (which are also unrelated).

The truth of the matter is, though, that crime prevention is really tough. Most of the focus of any police effort is reactive and not proactive because (watch Minority Report) you don't know that a crime is going to occur until it does in many cases.

The campus is just as safe today as it was two months ago, if not more. There isn't really anything that could have been done to prevent either of the two recent events from happening.

The stats on the official IPFW police website list statistics back to 2000. Also, these aren't like your corporate statistics used to make deals and win money. These are more like facts and figures than statistics. The IPFW Police and Safety are run through the FWPD dispatch system and all phone calls are recorded and yada yada. It's regulated. They're the straight up numbers of REPORTED incidents.

Well, anybody that thinks IPFW or about any place in Fort Wayne isn't very safe hasn't really been too far out of Fort Wayne...

the only thing you really have to fear at the dorms is falling through the floors due to the shotty woodwork.

Once again, you are more likely to die in an auto crash on your way to or from IPFW than any violence on campus.

There's no money to be made in arresting murderers.

On a side note, I just got the invoice for the towing bill of the victim's stolen car for the haul from Indy back to Fort Wayne across my desk today.

FW is well above the national average for metropolitan violent crime rates.
