Anyone here participate in local theatre?

Post by The_Dude »

I've been contemplating on whether or not to get back into acting. I had a lot of fun doing it in high school and recently so a production of "The Odd Couple" at the Arena Dinner Theatre here in town and it sort of gave me the bug to get back into it.

Anyone care to share any stories/experiences?

I participated in plays (I don't do musicals) from my 8th grade year in school through my Senior year and had the lead role in a few of the productions I was a part of. We were given probably, if I remember correctly, around 2 months to prepare for a 2-show performance. I'm not sure how much different it would be if I were to audition for a role @ a theatre here in town.

Anyways...any info/insight you can offer would be great.

I've got a friend that has been doing the "Shakespeare in the Park" stuff for several years. I've gone to a few showings and they are pretty good...I think they do most of the shows at IPFW. Let me know if that would interest you and if so, I can try to get a hold of some more info.

Actually, I don't think I would be interested in anything Shakespeare related. I've never been a fan.

I do appreciate the offer, though.

Doesn't Sankofa's wife have a degree in Theatre Arts? I'll bet she could help a lot!

If I remember, the local paper runs a "Ticket" section each week and often posts all upcoming auditions. I'd be willing to say that the Performing Arts Center and the Firehouse Theatre would both be good places to look.

It's been over 15 years since I've been in a show, and I miss it too. I just don't have the time to devote to practices and rehearsals.

I'm not sure. I'll have to shoot her an e-mail/PM to see what she has to say.

Thanks, Garr.

*insert joke about already having your mom's info here*

Seriously, though. I'll keep that in mind. I'm looking more for experiences from actors/actresses to see what kind of schedule I can expect.

I'll definitely keep that in mind about your mom, though. I may be hitting you up for her # if I decide to follow thru with anything.

Thanks.

The next time I talk to my cousin, I'll ask her about scheduling. She's done quite a few off-Broadway plays, an episode or two of TV (Law & Order comes to mind, but not a very big part) and an indie film ("Fortunes" if you want to look it up)...

No promises on time, as I only talk to her a few times a year, but I will certainly bring it up and see what I can find for ya!

According to my friend Kate (who performs in a lot of local theater), you are committing to six to eight weeks of rehearsals (that's five nights a week) and possibly a few weekend rehearsals, and then a run of two to four weekends of performance (which will include Friday and Saturday evenings and a 2 PM Sunday matinee, usually).

i can't think of his name but ask the lead singer of the Bees Knees.

he's in every play I see advertised.

Wow. I was expecting a commitment but I had no clue it would be 5 nights per week. I guess it only makes sense...practice makes perfect.

Thanks for the info, Silencio.
