10 for 10

Apostrophes are my new pet peeve. I even wrote a weblog about their misuse. I am so sick of people using apostrophes to denote pluralism. I could scream.

Anyhow, I stumbled upon this short quiz and I was surprised, but happy to get 10 for 10. The say 8 was tricky, and it wasn't easy, but I think that 3 is the most difficult because there are technically TWO correct answers. I got lucky and guessed the one I figured they were looking for.

Bad question!

Enjoy.

I was looking for too many trick answers...I went 9 for 10. I missed the last one as I didn't thing troops' was correct. I thought "troop" was already indicating plurality...oh well...the rest were easy!

It would seem your obsessiveness over grammatical correctness would cause you to beat your head against the wall when reading posts on an internet forum. :)

I have a looser standard when it comes to internet forums. I mean that I let things slip that are clearly typos or inadvertent mistakes. When someone misuses "your" and "you're" or "there", "their" or "they're," I have a problem. Also its and it's. I really get angry at those. My recent peeve, though (as stated above) is people who use apostrophes to denote pluralism. The apostrophe NEVER makes a plural. I've searched and searched for a standard that allows it and the closest I've come is colloquial writings for things that are made into acronyms or consist of numbers, but even those are not supposed to use an apostrophe.

Okay, I have to get away from this now or I'll start getting angry.

I tried to take the quiz and then I felt like I was back in elementary school again. I hated english class. I was a science geek I guess.

In retrospect, puctuation does not bother me much. I get what the intent was so I don't care. Communication achieved. I can empathize with you Garr a little bit though and understand why it bothers you so much.

My pet peeve is when people don't know a city from a state. For example.. What's the capital of Colorado? umm...Nevada?

That drives me nuts!

I've never gotten angry at a person's grammar, or even spelling. But I usually do judge a person by it. Some people I know, so I know its just them hurrying or whatnot, but others...well, it does tell you something about them...

I blame it all on my mother, really. I don't remember being this way when I was younger. It all started when I reached my 20's, I believe. I don't honestly recall giving a crap when I was young, but I think that I have inherited my mother's penchant for picking out errors. I think it also has to do with my desire to be a writer and/or editor. Of course, I have NO desire for the schooling to be a writer or editor. Go figure. :)

Honest mistakes often times go by without a second glance. I note them, but leave them be. Ignorant mistakes (on the other hand) temporarily boil my blood, especially when I read them in a formal (as opposed to casual) post or environment. If you're writing something formally, please, for the love of Zeus, proofread it and have someone else proof it too.
